A.).—The general meeting of the student body at the University of Graz, held in the uni versity hall, was thrown into tur moil and transformed into an anti- Semitic series of excesses. In the middle of the proceedings, the cry was raised, “Out with the Jews.” “Only Aryans may participate." When the .Jewish students refused to leave the hall, feeling that they are as good a part of the student body as any others, they were surrounded by the "Aryan knights” and forcibly ejected. Dean Martinack, who was present, looked on calmly, without uttering a word of protest. Even the Jewish girl students were not spared. The Socialist student group attempt ed to protect the Jewish students, but when their efforts failed, they left the hall as a sign of protest against the outrage. ANONYMOUS DONOR ESTABLISH ES ( HAIR FOR INTERNATIONAL PEACE AT HEBREW UNIVER SITY Creates Endowment In Honor of Dr. Chaim Weizmann Jerusalem, (J. T. A.).—An endow ment fund of approximately £15,000 was created by an anonymous donor, a Zionist residing in England, for the establishment of a Chair for Inter national Peace at the Hebrew Univer sity on Mount Scopus. The chair is to bear the name oi Dr. Chaim Weizmann, president of the World Zionist Organization. The donor has presented to the board of governors of the Hebrew University a block 15,000 7Vj» per cent cumulative preference shares of a well known pub lic company. I)r. Weizmann, informed here of the endowment, sent a cable accepting the gift and expressing his pleasure that the chair would be established in his name. T. A.)—The Gott- heil Medal for distinguished service for the year 1928 was Friday n'ght awarded by Zeta Beta Tau, in absen tia, to Julius Rosenwald of ( hicago in recognition of his contributions to education, Social welfare and philan thropy regardless of creed. Unable to attend the New York banquet due to the illness of his wife, .Mr. Rosenwald received the presenta tion at a dinner the same evening in Chicago, given by the Graduate Club of the Fraternity. One hundred members of the fra ternity from New York, Philadelphia, Syracuse and other points in the East, including national officers, attended the dinner in the Hotel Roosevelt at which the presentation ceremonies took place. Although he could not at tend the dinner, Mr. Rosenwald lis tened in on the proceedings which were broadcast, over stations WRNY and VVXAL and received in 36 cities from coast to coast where Zeta Beta fau dinners were simultaneously tak ing place. A telegram expressing regret at his inability to attend and indicating his acceptance of the award was read at the banquet. In acknowledging the award, he said: “I accept the medal and the distinction it carries with it, although 1 feel my good fortune comes because your Committee has failed to recognize the good deeds of others far more deserving. 1 hope to continue to merit the respect and the esteem of my co religionists which I desire above all.” Sabbath services were conducted by Rabbi A. L. Feinberg. Citing his gifts to negro education and philanthropy, his large contributions to Russian colonization, his educational gifts that extend from Syria west to Japan, Mi Reigelman declared the award was made in recognition of “an intellect and conscience sensitive to the need* of all men, able and willing to anal yze and meet these needs, a wise open minded, open handed man, a Jew, who serving all mankind well, served Judaism best. “We honor the philanthropist, the great and wise giver whose largess is marked not alone by its generous bounty but by the dramatic effective ness with which it drew public atten tion to the existence of problems which were commanding public con cern and in respect to which there has not been appropriate public interest,” he continued. “The field in which these gifts have been made is as broad as humanity. The proportions of his gifts have been commensurate with the nobility of their purposes.” Mr. Brown emphasized that in climbing the ladder of success, Mr. Rosenwald had not kicked the va rious rungs behind him. On the con trary remembering well the various stages of his fight with circumstances, he acquired a sympathy of his stand ing of unparalleled breadth. JEWISH RELIGIOUS EDUCATION MADE COMPULSORY BY DANZIG CITY ORDINANCE Danzig—(J. T. A.)—The inculca tion of Jewish religious training into Jewish pupils attending the public- schools in the Free City of Danzig has been ordered obligatory in a city- ordinance. According to a regulation issued by the educational department of the Danzig Senate it is compulsory for Jewish pupils attending the commu nal elementary schools to attend the Jewish religious classes as well.
