Vatican City—(J. T. A.) Profes
sor Albert Einstein, the famous Jew
ish scientist and author of the Theory
of Relativity is regarded by the Cath
olic Church as an atheist, if the com
ment of the Osservatore Romano, usu
ally the mouthpiece of the Vatican
for official announcements, is to be
taken as the official view of the I ope
Pius XI.
The Papal Organ, in an editorial,
yesterday, commends Cardinal O’Con
nell of Boston, who is now on a visit
to Rome, for his recent attack on the
famous scientist concerning whose
theories he stated that they were “the
befogged speculation producing uni
versal doubt about God and His crea
tion,” and “cloaking the ghastly ap
parition of Atheism.”
The Osservatore Romano declares
that the American Cardinal was right
in his views about Professor Ein
stein’s theories. His theories, the
paper says, have a “tendency to cut
off atheism even if camouflaged as
cosmic pantheism.”
