WHEN GROWN-UPS WANT
JUDAISM
(Continued from Page 25)
to the roll call. But at almost every
session you will see men and women
present who are just there to hear
about Judaism. They follow the He
brew lessons, join the discussion in
ethics, and give their experiences in
the psychological free-for-all. These
auditors are some Orthodox and some
Reform Jews and points of view often
differ hut all realize that essentially
Judaism is Judaism.
We have since introduced new cours
es, notably one in Jewish Social Serv
ice, including such matters as the Jew
ish Child, the Jewish Home, etc. These
too have met with success and are es
pecially popular with our unofficial
auditors.
Our dream is that some day we may
become not a Jewish University but
a University for Judiasm. We person
ally believe we are tending that way.
Meanwhile we are turning out Jewish
teachers (calls for teachers come to
us from all over New Jersey) and are
attracting Jewish adults interested in
Jewish education.
Some Observations
Possibly what is most significant of
all is what we have concluded after
three years of observation. In our own
community are temples that spare no
effort or expense in appealing for
the wider interest of the Jewish men
and women. One of the recently tried
appeals has been that of athletic re
creation. People came to swim and
smoke and play hut not to pray. They
t>eeame interested in recreation but
this interest did not lead to one in
Judaism. And when other agencies of
fered recreation that outrivaled the
temple’s, the temple suffered.
Now we have concluded that it is
not wise for the temple to offer arti
ficial lures. Rather than build swim
ming pools, we believe in building
schools. Rather than basketball tourna
ments, we believe in Jewish open fo
rums. We firmly believe in less recrea
tion and more education. Our mission
is not to compete with athletic clubs
hut to teach. Our school has brought
people to the temple; brought them to
stay and pray. Since the inception of
our school, our services are attended
as never before. We know that this
unprecedented attendance is to some
extent at least directly due to our
school. And we believe that what Jews
want and Jews expect from a temple
is inspiration and education. You can
startle them into a show of interest
with Roman entertainment, but such
interest in the words of Polonius may
be, “sweet not lasting.”
