“Had he lived, his * voice would
have been heard in connection with
the outrages perpetrated on our peo
ple in Palestine. Not the voice of
hate, but the voice of justice. Not
a cry to arouse the passions, but an
appeal for understanding, for sym
pathy, for protection for our people
today and for all time.
“My wishes for the New Year to
you and your loved ones, is that hap
piness shall come to you. That the
spirit of service shall grow within
you. That you be counted on as one
of the army who will carry on the
w’ork of Louis Marshall, for which
the world has crowned him the great
est Jew of his time.”
The Executive Committee of the In
stitute announces with much satisfac
tion that Dr. Shalom Spiegel of Haifa,
Palestine, has accepted its invitation
to serve as Visiting Teacher during
the academic year, 1929-1930. Dr. Spie
gel, who is one of the most distinguish
ed of the younger scholars in Palestine,
is to give courses in Elementary He
brew, Mediaeval Hebrew Literature
and Bible. Dr. Spiegel was born in
Bukowina in 1899. He studied in the
Israelitisch-Theologische Lehranstalt
in Vienna and at the University of
Vienna, from which he received the
degree of Doctor of Philosophy in
1922. Since then, he has been instruc
tor in Hebrew Language and Litera
ture at the Beth Ha-sepher Ha-reali
in Haifa, Palestine, in addition to giv
ing lectures in 1925 and 1926 on the
History of Hebrew Literature at the
Hebrew Technical College in Haifa. In
Palestine, Dr. Spiegel was engaged in
communal and cultural work as lec
turer and author and wrote a num
ber of essays in Hebrew, and occas
ionally in English periodicals, on He
brew Literature and Education. He re
cently completed a hook on the He
brew Literature of the last two cen
turies, which will appear under the
title “Hebrew Reborn.” At present he
is preparing a critical edition of the
liturgical poetry of Eleazar Ha-kalir
on the basis of early editions and
manuscripts.
