POLISH SYNDICATE PURCHASES
PALESTINE TOBACCO
Warsaw (J. T. A.)—The Polish to
bacco monopoly purchased the entire
tobacco crop of the Jewish colony
Rosh Pinah, Galilee, according to an
announcement made here by Mr. Bar-
silai, president of the Upper Galilee,
tobacco syndicate, who is now- here.
The crop amounts to 5,000 kilo, Mr.
Barsilai expressed the hope that the
Polish syndicate will purchase 100,000
kilo next year, it being convinced of
the high quality of the Palestine to
bacco.
From the Frying Pan Into the Fire
«eemcd as if fate had said to him:
••Then* is nothing for you to do here.
[ have already done for you what you
intended to do.
The same fate had led his daughter
Ksterka to the altar and placed her
•n to arms of the man she loved. It
helped the poor and comforted the
«uffering. and it transformed him into
( beggar him, Benzion, who was the
wealthiest man in town before he left
n his last business journey. He had
nothing now that he could call his
,wn. What was he to do now? How
was he to atone for his misguided
life? Was he to use the power the
law gave him and get back his for
tune from those who held it? His
baser self to which he had listened
all his life told him to recover his
fortune by aid of the law, if it could
not be done any other way. But what
f all the good resolutions? How
could he be certain he would live up
them? It was indeed a dilemma.
The problem was solved, however,
through Sigmund who persuaded the
heirs to return to Reb Benzion what
was rightfully his. The same day,
when his children returned to him
the money goodnaturedly and gladly,
the heads of the various communal
institutions also offered to return the
supposed bequests which had come
into their respective treasuries. At
first the good resolutions made Reb
Benzion hesitate, but the old greed
f r gold came back to him and made
him take back the money. When he
had the money again safe in his pos-
“ession, however, it was as if he had
placed his fingers on glowing hot
coals. It burned and burned to his
very soul. He could not rest at night
nor was he at peace with himself dur
ing the day. Every time he looked at
a prayer book he recalled the words
of the forty-ninth psalm. After spend
ing one of the most miserable nights
he ever passed in his life, Reb Ben
zion went early next morning to the
head of the community and said:
“What once was given to the poor,
no matter through what circum
stances, belongs rightfully to them.
It is not mine any longer. Take this
money and return it to these institu
tions.”
Even today, a visitor to the little
town in Galicia can see the Home for
the Aged and Infirm, with the inscrip
tion of the name of its founder: “Reb
Benzion Celdhaber.”
Reb Benzion lived many more years
in peace and earned the esteem of his
fellow citizens. Every year he cele
brated his eventful return to his home
by a dinner to which the entire Jew
ish community was invited.
As for the two pillars of the com
munity, “Piety” and “Wisdom,” the
latter remained true to his motto and
left the city through his little "back
door.” “Piety,” too, understood that
he could remain no longer in the liitle
town, and “for the glory of God and
the good of the community” said fare
well forever. The whole community
was glad to hear his farewell, for it
meant peace and good will among its
members.
