NINETEEN MEMBERS BUILD TEMPLE
This picture shows the Morgan City, La., Temple, built by a congre
gation of I ( ) members in the face of a 10-year economic depression
and a hurricane and flood.
In the sugar-cane farming district
of Louisiana, suffering from financial
depression for the past ten years,
with a million dollar plantation bank
ruptcy, a hurricane, and a flood fol
lowing in rapid succession, the com
munity of Morgan City has complet
ed a new temple which stands today
almost entirely debt-free. And this
with the support of but nineteen mem
bers.
Nor are they satisfied with this ac
complishment. The secretary of this
congregation. Mr. Paul Sehreier, in
a letter to Rabbi Louis I. Egleson, as
sistant director of the Department L
Synagogue and School Extensi-r..
Union of American Hebrew Congre
gations, writes as follows:
“If conditions seem favorable, w e
propose making an effort to have
three or four towns between Morgar.
City and Lafayette, La., unite to 4
tain the services of a rabbi, who couk
officiate once each month in each
town.
“W hile our membership seem?
small, our Temple was crowded lac.
Friday and Saturday. Services are
conducted by officers of the tempk,
with a small choir.
SAYS ZIONISTS MUST GIVE UI’ HOPE OF HAYING
JEWISH NATIONALITY DOMINANT
IN PALESTINE
Philadelphia (J. T. A.)—“The Zion
ists must give up the hope of having
a Jewish nationality dominant in Pal
estine,” was the statement of Rabbi
W illiam H. P ineshriber, preaching at
Temple Keneseth Israel here Sunday.
“The real cause of the uncalled-for
slaughter of the innocents in Pales
tine—something much like the old po
groms—is a clash between two cul
tures." said Dr. Fineshriber. “There
is today an Oriental revolt against
the West, in India, too, and in Egypt.
Again our people have been the
scapegoat to bear the burden of the
sins of the nations.
Some have said: "The Jews of the
world must continue to pour into Pal
estine thousands and thousands and
thousands!
^ hen they are told this policy will
lead to more massacres, they answer:
That s the burden Jews have to bear.
The proposal is stupid and cruel.
It is no solution. It is an injustice to
the unfortunate Polish and Rouman
ian Jews who would bear the brunt of
it.
The traditional way of dealing
with the problem is to say: ‘England
hasn’t done her duty—she must send
more soldiers and put Zionist sympa
thizers in control!’
That s simply the old philosophy
of force. There are some Judges to-
day who make this same mistake of
thinking that the problem of moral
delinquency can be settled by force.
English force has failed in Egypt.
It must be understood that there are
different peoples in the world. *a r.
with a right to its own civilization
and culture.
“Pacification, not force, is the solu
tion. Zionists and non-Zionists shouk
not enrage the Arabs by speaking
blatantly of ‘ the coming Jewish ma
jority.’ That will stimulate to new ex
cesses.
