How I Found My Way To Judaism Ity MONSIEUR AIME PALLIERE Author of “The Unknown Sanctuary” Excerpts from the address given by Monsieur Aime Palliere, at the Free P Synagogue, New York City, Sunday, November 10, 1929. Synagogue, When I trod in the sanctuary of the Scriptures of Israel, no more with the mind of the Christian reader who looks on the pages with the light thrown by his own gospel and who retrospectively projects his creeds into it, but rather as one who finds the treasury of the national literature of God’s people, then, my brother Jews, I was able to discover that you had a spiritual ascendence which makes that of the former heathen who be came Christian seem of rather recent date, a religious tradition rich enough, deep enough to have itself given birth to other currents of spiritual life. And how, I ask you, could my soul, becom ing identified with the thought, the faith, the hopes <>f Israel, help but become Jewish? How could I help but participate in your ancient heritage, l, also, heir of your prophets, follow er of your Moses, son of Abraham your father, but also the father of all the believers, according to the promise of God? How I found my way to Judaism? My dear hearers, 1 found my way to Judaism by seeing the Judaism, not as a little religion, not as a kind of theology, not as dogmas, nor beliefs, but as a living people holding from God Himself its right to life. “You are my witnesses” says God to Is rael by the lips of the prophet Isaiah Israel has been, for me who speaks to you, the witness of God in the story of the world. And how 1 wish that each one of you here could feel in his own life the presence and the action of the God of your fathers, as 1 feel them. Christianity: it is that error which consists in denying to the Jewish peo ple the right to life which they hold from their God. For, verily, people deny that right when they ask the Jews to accept for themselves Latin and Greek theology and metaphysics, and to mingle with the nations. It is plain that, if the efforts of conversion made by the Church had succeeded, we would speak of the Jews as we speak of the Babylonians, that is, as a dead race. And who does not see and feel that an essential note would be lacking in the concert of the peo ples and that the religious patrimony of mankind would be lessened? It may be that the spring which quenches Israel’s thirst is not as deep as that out of which other people drink, but still it is not proved. And the Jews have the right to drink from their own spring with their own drinking cup. That right is inalienable. And that is why, long before the Balfour Declaration, when I was still among tlie followers of the Church, and per haps by an effect of that very logic which the Catholic discipline had taught me, I already wished the re building of the Jewish National Home, as the right of Israel to life. I raise my solemn protest against RAW MATERIALS TO BE ADMIT TED TO RUSSIA FREE OF DUTY, NEW AGREEMENT REACHED Moscow (J. T. A.)—Permission to send raw materials free of duty to their relatives in Russia who are now among the "declassed,” has been granted Jews in countries abroad, in cluding America. An agreement signed today between the Comzet governmental department and the Ort Association, which promotes trades and agriculture among the Jews in Russia, makes this possible. The great importance of the new agreement was pointed out since a large number of Jewish artisans are lacking work due to the shortage of raw materials. These can now be sup plied by Jews abroad who can send them directly to their relatives here. J. T. A. ENTERTAINS FOREIGN CORRESPONDENTS IN JERUSALEM Jerusalem (J. T. A.)—Col. Freder ick II.
