one of the earlier discussions
j Harry Levi of Temple Israel,
'yn, said that the day w r hich saw
'■t ers of the three main religious
d ,s meeting to discuss such a prob-
1 had taken so long to materialize
’he occasion was one for humil-
rather than jubilation.
President A. Lawrence Lowell of
Harvard, one of the three speakers at
the opening session, sounded the key
note of the entire series when he said:
“Docs loyalty to a nation or a church
imply ill will to a rival? If that trait
cannot be changed, our civilization
cannot progress to a better stage. If
this is true that loyalty must be ac
companied by hostility to those try
ing to get on in the same way, then
man moves in a dismal circle. What
is needed is to arouse religious fer-
ver without religious rancor, relig
ious sympathy, not religious antag
onism.”
One of the features of the discus
sion was an extremely frank discus
sion of the topics of “Misrepresenta
tions of Religious Beliefs and Prac
tices” and “Community Conflict and
Cooperation” in which 490 represen
tatives of the three religions partici
pated.
