The Southern Israelite
Idling Judaea Convenes in Atlanta
The Work of Young Judaea
By LOUIS GEFFEN
President, Southern Interstate Yount/
Judaean Association
From August 3rd to August 8th the
Young Judaeans of the South will par
ticipate in the Eleventh Annual Con
vention of the Southern Interstate
Young Judaean Association. This con
vention is always the culmination of a
year’s work and effort and is looked
forward to by all Young Judaeans with
a great amount of interest.
Ever since its inception Southern In
terstate has become a real asset to the
Jewish community that it has served
and still is serving. Through its local
clubs it has developed leaders among
our Jewish youth who have become
leaders in their respective communities.
Individual members of the clubs have
become better acquainted with Hebrew
history and Jewish culture and, above
all, they have become imbued with an
interest in "Eretz Yisroel.”
Southern Interstate has extended its
influence into such cities as New Or
leans, Shreveport, Memphis, Chatta
nooga, Mobile, Montgomery, Birming
ham Jacksonville Tampa Miami, At
lanta, Rome, Columbus, Savannah and
Charleston. In all of these communities
Jewish boys and girls have grouped
themselves into Young Judaean Clubs,
thus affording the boys and girls Jew
ish associations and contacts.
Each year at the convention there
are reports and discussions concerning
the work of the past year, and plans
are outlined for the work of the com
ing year. This year’s convention will
have a special feature. The Young
Judaeans of Atlanta who are sponsor
ing this convention are planning a Spe
cial Alumni Dinner for those Young
Judaeans who at one time or another
were very active and participated in
Young Judaea work.
Southern Interstate is also desirous
of getting new cities interested in
Young Judaean work. For that reason
invitations have been extended to cities
where there are no Young Judaean
Clubs to be represented at the con
vention and familiarize themselves with
Southern Interstate activities.
Louis Geffcn
Southern Interstate is expecting
every city to be represented by its dele
gates and visitors so that they can par
ticipate in the “Wonder Convention
as it has been designated by Atlanta
Young Judaeans.
A Personal Message From
the Past resident
Fellow Judaeans:
The Eleventh Anniversary Conven
tion of the Southern Interstate will be
held in Atlanta from Sunday, August
3rd, to Wednesday, August 6th, in
clusive.
This convention, which marks the
culmination of eleven years of Young
Judaea effort, is expected to surpass
our previous annual gatherings in point
of attendance, program, and congenial
ity. The program will include a ban
quet and special sessions for leaders.
There will also take place special edu
cational programs for the ensuing year.
My little message is for you old work-
■ ■ —
As your Past President, let this little
note wish the convention an enormous
success.
CHARLES W. BERGMAN.
Greetings From An "Ole
Timer"
Time rolls on, the “old” go out. “Well
done,” old faithful, your work is over.
The “new” come in. “Your work is
before you; tackle it.”
As the years roll by we look back
and think of the wonderful work that
has been done among Jewish boys and
girls to make them better men and
women. We think of the time served
by "Poss” Goldstein, Harry Hurwitz,
Max Cuba, Ben Zion Segal, and others.
What will the future hold? Will it
produce better leaders?
In order to “carry on” the work
already started by Young Judaea, it
is absolutely necessary that we have

Interstate Yount/ Judaean

of Atlanta Council of

ers of Southern Interstate to take off
a few days and visit with us, enter
into our discussions, and partake of our
socials. If you will there is plenty of
assurance that the expenses incurred
will be more than compensated by the
enthusiasm and the constructive sug
gestions all the delegates, because of
you, will carry back.
The interest in Southern Interstate
has not waivered; it is still strong and
still encouraging, and the work goes
on and on. Now we’re all interested
in the success of the Interstate, are
we not ? The fulfillment of its goal is
our fulfillment: the swelling of its race
is our joy—its dwindling our failure.
The key to this success is simple: it is
that each Young Judaean, instead of
looking for someone to coax him to
attend the convention, to willingly “fly”
to Atlanta during the first week in Au
gust and there lay plans for the com
ing year.
■
cooperation of former members of
Young Judaea. We are well aware of
the fact that many of its members are
now married and are in the business
world. However, there are a great
number who no doubt would like very
much to help “carry on” the great
work. It will be an inspiration to the
younger members, when they gather in
Atlanta the first week in August, to
see the interest manifested by the for
mer members of Young Judaea.
Come on, “Garry Sisken"! Remem
ber the good old times in Chattanooga
in 1924? How about it, Harry Hur
witz. ole Birmingham in 1927. Bring
all the other fellows with you. We are
going to have a real “get-together” this
year in Atlanta. An “Ole Timers” meet
ing. How about you “Ole Folks” from
Memphis and all the rest of the towns?
I’ll be seeing you in Atlanta the first
week in August.
OLE TIMER.
