Start New School
Year In Israel
JERUSALEM, (JTA) — Some
600,000 children started the new
school year this week ift over
crowded classrooms and With the
threat of a teacher’s strike still
unresolved.
’ Record expenditures dtzrlnf
the year 15,000,000 pounds ($7,-
2*0,000) on n^jw school facilities
failed to eliminate the over
crowding. A new strike is most
likely among teachers of high
schools in which graded tuition
fees, averaging 5*0 pounds
($280), are insufficient to meet
teacher demands for IS percent
salary increases. The elementary
school teachers insist on reduc
tion of the large clstSSes ahd

Israel’s Bank Leumi
Opens New York Branch
NEW YORK, (JTA) —The
opening of a branch in the United
States, at 60 Wall Street here has
been announced by Bank Leumi
le-Israel. The bank—which has
135 branches in Israel, and af
filiated banks in London and
Zurich—is among the first six
foreign banks licensed to open
branches here, following last
year’s revision of the New York
State banking law entitling it,
among other activities, to accept
deposits and savings accounts
from the general public.
Establishment of the New
York branch is the culmination
of eleven years of Bank Leumi’s
activities in the United States. It
had opened a representative of
fice in New York in 1950, and be
came an agency in 1959. Conver
sion of the agency into a full-
fledged branch now enables the
bank to transact every kind of
commercial banking business.
Gideon Strauss, who was Israel’s
first commercial consul in New
York, has been named manager
of the branch.

Twenty yews ago, in the dark, uneasy
days before Pearl Harbor, the Minute
Man of Concord, timeless symbol of our
Nation’s determination to defend its free
dom, emerged as the emblem of the
U. S. Savings Bonds Program. When war
came, the Minute Man became the rally
ing force behind the huge and over
whelmingly successful effort to back our
fighting men with War Bonds.
In this, the 20th anniversary year of
Savings Bonds, the Minute Man of Con
cord calls all Americans to an unremit
ting effort to help preserve our peace and
freedom, threatened by forces more
powerful and resourceful than those we
faced in 1941. Though this effort will
take many forms, one way open to all
is the continued investment in Shares
in America, U. S. Savings Bonds, by
“citizens who regard the preservation of free-
dim as a baste purpose of their daily life."
