tributions, and that everyone
was glad to give her money, as
she was a good person and
would seee that it was given
to a needy family in Europe.
Sophie Weiss remembered how
the Yudelson family arrived
in Atlanta at the Terminal
Station at 4 o’clock in the
morning, and everyone turned
out to welcome them. Annie
Sacks brought out one of her
most reassured possessions, her
portrait of Solomon Isaac that
her parents had brought from
Yonova, so that all might gaze
on the kindly, patriarchial face
with the white beard and the
yarmilke. Anyone would have
been proud of a great-grand
father who looked like that.
Many a tear was shed as the
memories unrolled and
thoughts, hopes, trials, and
small victories with them.
On July 29, 1951, after much
planning and many meetings,
the Saul Family Circle held its
first reunion at the Mayfair
Club, Atlanta. Sol I. Yudelson,
a namesake of Solomon Isaac,
was the first president, and
Mildred Hershberg the first
secretary. That evening was a
memorable one with cousins
attending from far and near.
Some greeted one another for
the first time in years, while
others met for the first time.
Plans for a permanent Saul
Family Circle were made. It
was suggested that the Swan
and Crest on the shield of King
Saul be adopted as a family
emblem, and so it was.
And then each summer is
the reunion to which all the
members of the Saul Family
are welcome. Each year there
are new faces—a cousin from
a distance—even as far away
as Tel Aviv, Israel, or John-
nesburg, Africa—a new son or
daughter-in-law, or a child
who has become old enough to
attend. Time has a way of
dimming memories, and dilut
ing emotions, but to the mem
bers of the Saul Family who
attend the annual reunion,
there is the pleasant nostalgia
of both renewing past kinships
and the warmness of today’s
associations. Each year a com
mittee endeavors to make that
reunion the most memorable.
The past presidents of the
organization are Sol Yudelson.
