“Dear Brothers.” he said, “cer
tainly every one of you built his
own house. When you began lay
ing the foundation, you crossed
yourself three times, recited the
Our Father, sprinkled your work
with Holy Water, and in a whisper
to heaven asked our Lord to help
you build.
“My men and I have been sum
moned by the Ukraine govern
ment to help you build your
homes, and your state. We are
building a nation, my brothers.
How can you think of sprinkling
the foundation of our nation with
blood? There must be law and
order in our nation. To take the
law into your own hands to set
tle real or imagined grievances, is
sinful . . .“
The peasants put away their
weapons and began to return
home. In a half hour, the streets
of Chmelnyk were empty. Major
Klodnycky had stopped a pogrom
before it was started.
In appreciation, a delegation of
the Jewish community, headed by
its chief rabbi. Shalula Ben Jos
eph Leir, offered Major Klod
nycky 200,000 rubles as a gift from
the Jewish population. The offer
was refused but it marked the
beginning of a friendly alliance
between the Jews and the army
in efforts to help the town.
Major Klodnycky asked for per
mission to address the congrega
tion of Chmelnyk’s synagogue. In
the crowded house of worship he
spoke to the “dear citizens of
Chmelnyk of the faith of Moses”
and asked for their help in a pro
ject of brotherhood.
“War and danger have not
brought us closer together,” the
Major said. “Perhaps hunger, dis
ease and impoverishment can
unite our village.”
The major asked the rich to
help the poor and his request was
quickly heeded. He administered
the funds he received for the good
of the community. While pogroms
were raging in other parts of
Eastern Europe, the Jews of Chme
lnyk were working together with
Ukrainian craftsmen, workers,
farmers—and the army itself.
It is not hard to find records
of pogroms. However, were it not
for the chief rabbi of Chmelnyk
there would be no record of the
deeds of a man who not only
averted a pogrom but achieved
