Good Citizen. Good Friend
Great is the debt that Dothan owes Myer Blumberg, who
will be laid to rest today. Because of him this community is
richer spiritually, sounder economically, more progressive in
thought, and well instructed in the blessings of friendship. To
this he was dedicated.
Devoted to his own Temple Emanu-El which he assisted in
organizing and served as president, Mr. Blumberg was likewise
a staunch friend and supporter of churches of all denominations,
being convinced that until man served God he could not render
maximum service to his fellows. This high sense of spiritual
values made his heart as big as all outdoors.
Other men who helped shape Dothan’s destiny may have
worried about it as much as Mr. Blumberg, but none worried
more. It was ever a cause of concern to him and that concern
was translated into action. He worked in harness and out to put
this community’s economy on a sound basis, always driving
home the point that it had to be diversified and flexible.
Mr. Blumberg paid appropriate respect to the past for he
realized it was a great teacher. But he was forever impatient
with the status quo. The important challenge was the future
and he believed in being prepared for tomorrow’s opportunity.
A team man in Dothan’s development programs, he counseled,
urged and fretted for a progressive outlook and was success
ful in implanting this viewpoint.
Civic-minded to a degree few others have matched or will
match in the future, Mr. Blumberg was an unflagging booster
of Dothan and the Wiregrass region around it. He was a charter
member of the Kiwanis Club, helped form the United Charities
Chest, was an organizer and reorganizer of the Boy Scout asso
ciation, took a leading role in establishing the Girl Scout move
ment in the area, had a hand in conceiving the Wiregrass
Farmers Produce Market and making that dream a reality, work-

ed early and late for and with the Chamber of Commerce. In
between all these activities he found time and energy to assist
in countless other movements and efforts to enlarge and im
prove Dothan throughout the years.
Mr. Blumberg loved Dothan in the most literal sense. He
cherished it as a pride and joy.
This was one Myer Blumberg. There was another, Myer
Blumberg the friend. His friendships were everlasting and be
yond tabulating because they were of the golden sort. As he
rejoiced in the good fortune, the achievement and success of
others so did he share their sorrows and their burdens. Smile or
tear, it was genuine and reflected the depth of his heart.
In the passing of Myer Blumberg, good citizen and good
friend, this community’s loss is heavy but Dothan is grateful
for having had him as a leader, citizen and companion.

The chief rabbi wrote his letter
in some detail. He cited Major
Klodnycky for organizing hos

providing the poor with food and
firewood. He wrote of the Major’s
participation in all Chmelnyk
meetings, civic and religious, of
his advice and help. And—because
Army officers must necessarily
travel—he asked the rabbis in all
Jewish communities to recognize
Major Klodnycky as a friend of

ended his proclamation with these
words:
“May God grant him happiness
wherever he may go.”
Major Klodnycky began his mis
