Rumania Displays
Friendlier Attitude
Toward Israel
TEL AVIV, (JTA) — The
Communist Government of Ru
mania notified Israeli officials, in
a further demonstration of its
friendlier attitude, of appoint
ment of a full ranking Minister
in Israel. The Rumanian Legation
here has been headed only by a
Charge D’Affaires.
The Bucharest Government has
displayed a more independent
attitude on Israel than other
East European capitals also in
other ways. One recent example ,
was shown by Rumania in the
United Nations, where its dele
gate abstained from an anti-
Israel resolution which was sup
ported by other members of the
Communist bloc.,

AMERICAN NAZI
SENTENCED IN
WASHINGTON
- WASHINGTON, (JTA) — The
most severe sentence yet imposed
on a member of the American
Nazi Party in the District of
Columbia was imposed on
“stormtrooper” Robert E. Bruce,
20, who was sentenced to 180 days
in jail for disrupting a session of
the U. S. House of Representatives
last Sept. 24. Bruce was also or
dered held for grand jury action
for assaulting a police officer dur
ing the disturbance.
General Sessions Court Judge
George B. Nelson sentenced
Bruce on two disorderly conduct
counts for throwing a swastika
flag and racist pamphlets from
the visitor’s gallery at the
Capital building to the House
floor and shouting slogans sup
porting George Rockwell. Judge
Harold H. Greene ordered Bruce
held on $10,000 bond on the
charge of assaulting a police
officer attempting to arrest him.
The severe sentence followed
expressions by Members of Con
gress who were angered when
Nazis previously disrupted Con
gressional proceedings but were
freed upon forefeiture of merely
$10 or $20 in collateral. District
authorities had apparently em
barked on stricter policy of
prosecution for offenses involv
ing meetings of Congress when
the Bruce incident took place.
AJC Protests Sale
Of Seized Nazi Items
X4M
ACTION DANCING
LaBRANCH
WASHINGTON (JTA) — The
American Jewish Committee has
raised the issue of a contemplated
auction of Nazi paraphernalia by
the United States Internal Rev
enue Service, and indicated that,
under constitutipnal considera
tions, the Government might
either destroy the Nazis' goods,
giving the Nazi Party a "fair
value” tax credit, or return the
items to George Lincoln Rock
well.
An IRS auction of the Nazi
Party property has been tempor
arily deferred because of Rock
well’s pending hearing in which
he is appealing for an injunction,
and owing to a complaint by Sen.
Clifford P. Case, New Jersey Re
publican. Sen. Case said that sale
by the Government of such items
as swastikas and hate literature,
seized to meet unpaid taxes,
would put Federal authorities “in
the position of purveying for
profit the same stock-in-trade as
the American Nazi Party.”
Sanford H. .Bolz, Washington
counsel of the American Jewish
Committee, said his group agreed
with Sen. Case but “we would go
further.” He said he has conveyed
to IRS Commissioner Sheldon
Cohen the view of his organiza
tion that it is one thing for Rock
well to circulate and sell hate
literature, swastikas, and so forth
—“but quite another matter for
the Government of the United
States to become a party to the
sale to satisfy a tax lien or for
any other purpose."
Mr. Bolz said: It is entirely
likely that such action by the
Government to sell or distribute
racist material is unconstitutional
Government action, forbidden by
the Fifth Amendment. Surely a
Government like ours, which is
dedicated to equality and to elim
ination of all forms of discrim
ination and prejudice’ from our
national life, should never become
a party to the circulation or pur
veying of racist material, litera
ture, or mailing lists designed for
their distribution to willing and
eager recipients, for the raising
of funds or any other reason.
He stressed that “if the Govern
ment cannot and should not sell
this material, it should destroy it
in the same way as it would other
contraband material it would not
wish to purvey or distribute in
the channels of trade or com
merce. But in deference to First
Amendment rights which Rock
well may have to possess and
use such material, the Internal
Revenue Service should give him
an appropriate credit against his
tax in the amount of the fair
value of such items, without
placing them on public auction
and selling them to others. There
are procedures which the Serv
ice might use to achieve this res
ult. If, for any reason, this could
not be done, then the Service
should return the material to
Rockwell, rather than to sell it to
others. This is a dirty business.
and the Government tbould
no part of it”
Mr. Bolz added that “we are
starting down a dangerous road,
indeed, if the Government la par-
mitted to purvey racist material
on the excuse that it is merely
raising money, rather than pro
moting racism.” He said he had
stated these views to the IRS
commissioner, and “sine e r e 1 y
trust” they will be adopted.

DETROIT, (JTA) — The Jew
ish Community Council here has
joined three Christian groups
representing the Catholic, Pro
testant and Eastern Orthodox
communities, to form an inter-
faith action for the use of the
purchasing power of all the re
ligious organizations toward im
plementation of racial justice
and equal job opportunities for
all races in this city. Announce
ment of the joint action was made
here by Dr. Samuel Krohn, pres
ident of the JCC; the Most Rev.
John F. Dearden, Catholic Arch
bishop of Detroit; Dr. Joseph L.
Roberts, president of the Metro
politan Detroit Council of Eas
tern Orthodox Churches.
The Project Equality program
was launched several months ago
by the Catholic archdioceses of
St. Louis, Detroit, San Antonio
and Hartford, Conn., and called
on all religious groupings in the
United States to join a common
effort to end discriminatory em

quire similar agreements from
their suppliers of goods and serv

Haboker Newspaper
Closes; May Merge
With Herut Organ
TEL AVIV, (JTA) — Haboker,
one of Israel’s oldest daily news
papers and organ of the Liberal
party, sent dismissal notices last
week to all employes effective
January 1 when the paper was
to haft publication. It may merge
with “Herut,” the publication of
the Herut party.
Both parties have small circu
lations and huge deficits which
have been covered by the two
political parties which formed an
alignment called Gahal for the
November 2 municipal and Par
liamentary elections. The Herut
paper also sent dismissal notices
to its staff members. The merger
may presage closer ties between
the two parties, observers said.
A number of Liberal party mem
bers declined to participate in the
merger and ran an Independent
Liberal slate in the elections.
ard unified action.
Control of the interfaith pro
gram will be vested in a 12-man
board of directors, three appoint
ed by each faith. John H.
Shephard, of the Jewish Com
munity Council, was named legal
advisor.
Dr. Krohn said that the Jewish
Community Council was very
pleased to join with the archdi
ocese as a founding member. He
noted that, since its establish
ment almost 30 years ago, the
Jewish Community Council had
been “deeply committed to the
effort to achieve equal rights and
opportunities for all men, and to
eliminate all traces of discrim
ination based on religion, race or
national origin.’’
