Silver Lining
By RABBI SAMUEL SILVER

It was all well for Columbus
to discover America.
Now it is time for America to
discover Columbus.
I mean Columbus, Ohio.
That capital city
is noted for its
e n o rmous uni
versity, its huge
capital building

Ohioans who be

one of its great
sons, James
Thurber.
But Columbus should also be
more widely known for its rab
bis. One of them, Harry Kaplan,
is, I believe the champion Hillel

director in terms of tenure. A
widower, he is now married to
the widow of the famous Rabbi
Alexander Goode, the Jewish
hero of the Dorchester saga.
Another Columbus rabbi is
Dr. Jerome Folkman. His con
gregation is Temple Israel, a
goodly gathering of devoted Jews,
including the Lazarus family,
who are worthy of praise not only
for the acumen which goes into
the maintenace of one of the
largest department store com
plexes but also for their many
philanthropies.
Another Temple Israel leader
is Jack Resler, an industrialist
and leader of national religious
groups. One of Mr. Resler’s hob
bies is the distribution of copies
of the Ten Commandments in
Hebrew and English. He and Mrs.
Resler feel that this moral magna
carta ought to be better known.
So he will send you or anyone
else, without charge, copies of the
Decalogue. Just write him at 226
S. Columbia Avenue, Columbus,
Ohio.
But let’s get back to Rabbi
Folkman, a wise and genial
author and spiritual leader. One
practice he has introduced is that
of calling up couples who are
celebrating anniversary mile
stones and blessing them all over
again. He feels that husbands
and wives ought to be “re-mar
ried” often. Rabbi Folkman him
self is happily married to a wife
who is a real ayshes chad. So
each year he conducts a cere
mony of marriage-reconsecra-
tion. This past year he himself
reached a milestone; his 35th an
niversary. So he brought in a
guest rabbi who blessed the Folk-
mans and others observing spec
ial anniversaries.
Another Folkman practice is
that of deciding each December

who ought to be designated as
The Jewish Man of the Year. His
congregants and townspeople try
to guess each year whom he will
pick, and the speculation is as
animated as that for Time Mag
azine’s choice. The rabbi says that
the person he chooses must be
one on whom he can base a ser
mon. For the year 1965 Rabbi
Folkman’s selection was Sand/
Koufax, the first athlete ever
picked. Rabbi Folkman explained
that Sandy’s perfect game was
matched by his perfect fealty to
Jewish values.
Don’t you agree that Columbus
is worth discovering?
