Gala Victory Luncheon
Saluting
Division of
1966 Campaign, Women’s
Atlanta Jewish Welfare Fund
12 P. M. - Progressive Club
A first for Atlanta—on Tues
day, May 3, at 12:00 noon at the
Progressive Club, the Women’s
Division of the Atlanta Jewish
Welfare Fund will pause to cele
brate what has thus far been one
of the most successful campaigns.
Mrs. Jake Friedman and Mrs.
Marvin Goldstein, co-chairmen
of the 1966 Women’s Division
Campaign, jointly stated, "a ma
jor function of this nature is an
innovation for the Women’s Di
vision. It is the culmination of
several months of planning and
work by the 1966 campaign lead
ership. It affords an excellent op
portunity to not only celebrate
with all the contributors who will
participate in this most joyous
occasion, but also to pay tribute
to all those who have worked so
diligently to promote the success
of this endeavor. As the campaign
approaches a climax, the busy
leadership of the Women’s Divis
ion is honored and proud to
pause on May 3 to celebrate vic
tory.
This year the campaign has in
volved the total commitment and
cooperation of all the Jewish
women in Atlanta. The very im
pressive performance of the
Women’s Division for so many
years has been one of the major
phenomena of the Atlanta com
munity, and has done much to
crown the work of Welfare Fund
activities.
The officers of the Year-Round
Women’s Division, the entire 1966
Women’s Division Camp a i g n
Leadership, and the past Gen
eral Campaign Chairmen, and
presidents of Jewish women’s or
ganizations, also the chairmen of
the Young Women's Committee
MR. RICHARD TUCKER
METROPOLITAN OPERA STAR
for Community Service, will be
prominently spotlighted at the
Victory Luncheon.
MISS FRIEDA ABRAHAM
ISRAELI BEAUTY QUEEN
“The World’s Most Honored
Tenor,” Richard Tucker, along
with his charming wife, will be
the honored guests at the gala
Victory Luncheon. This is indeed
a rare and wonderful treat, as
Mr. Tucker is breaking all pre
cedents by appearing in public
the day before an important en
gagement. (Mr. Tucker stars as
Rodolfo in “La Boheme” here in
Atlanta on Wednesday, May 4.)
Only his “love and respect for the
Atlanta Jewish Community” cou
pled with the significance of the
occasion, persuaded him to say
“yes.” We are indeed privileged
to have this opportunity to salute
and honor Mr. Tucker, for his
life and career has certainly been
one of beauty to behold!
It was back on a frigid seven-
degree night in January 1945,
while the Russians pushed near
er Berlin and Nazi U-Boats
swarmed the North Atlantic, that
the young cantor of a Jewish
synagogue in Brooklyn, virtually
unknown and unheralded, stepp
ed onto the stage of New York’s
Metropolitan Opera House as
Enzo Grimaldo in "La Gioconda,”
and disclosing a vibrant tenor

voice that was the nearest to
Caruso’s anyone could remember
hearing, brought down the house
in one of its historic ovations.
Still an ordained cantor, entitled
to perform at weddings and fu
nerals, Mr. Tucker foregoes all
opera and concert engagements
twice a year to return to the pul
pit for the fall Jewish High Holy
Days and the traditional spring
Passover Seder Service. His life
has been a rich and rewarding
one, for his outstanding career
has been blended so beautifully
with the tightly knit and devout
ly Jewish family life that he
shares with his wife Sara, his
three sons, daughter-in-law, and
two grandchildren.
During the past year, the State
of Israel’s first "Artistic and Cul
tural Award,” betokening “his
significant contribution to inter
national amity through the uni
versal language of music,” and
the first annual B’nai B’rith
Award “for dist inguisbed
achievement in the performing
arts,” were both presented to Mr.
Tucker.
The Atlanta Jewish Welfare
Fund Women’s Division, wel
comes Mr. and Mrs. Richard
Tucker most warmly and affec
tionately.
