A king size coke-a-drama has
unfolded in the Jewish (and gen
eral) press recently with pub
lication of a number of stories
regarding the alleged refusal by
Coca Cola to franchise a bottling
plant in Israel. Certain Jewish
organizations stated that Coke
was adhering to an agreement
with Arab countries to boycott
Israel.
Then the Coca Co la Company
released its- side of the story.
Coke completely counters the ac
cusation that th<5 company is ac
quiescing to any kind of Arab
boycott of Israel. It classifies its
position as merely a matter of
good business judgment regard
ing present Israeli applicants for
the franchise.

Tempest
In a Coke Cup
Seems to me the whole tempest
is simply a case of a soft drink
with a hard policy. Twenty-four
bottles of business sense! In my
opinion, the Arabs have nothing
to do with the deal at all. And
I think maybe a great deal of
harm can be done by jumping up
and screaming “Arab” at a good
friend and neighbor just because
he doesn’t want to accept some
unattractive business offer in Is
rael.
Suppose your non-J e w i s h
friend who lives next door got
an offer for a job in Israel—but
turned it down because maybe
the salary wasn’t right or he
didn’t like the company, hr the
vacation time wasn’t long enough
or whatever. Would you call him
an Arab sympathizer?
Now in our town of Atlanta,
which happens to be the world
headquarters for Coca Cola, we
know Coke as a good friend and
neighbor for all the Jewish com
munity. We—the City, its Jewish
community, and the Company"—
kind of grew up together.
Through the years there have
been several top Coke executives
who were Jewish. This town is the
birthplace of that international
favorite—and we are proud of it.
Jews, Gentiles, old folks, young
folks, everybody.
Still, I’d be the first to join in
some economic sanctions of Coca
Cola if you could show me some
accusations of anti-Semitism
against that company which had
any merit. But they don’t exist
at this point. We wouldn’t con
demn a person without hearing
his side in a fair trial—would we?
So what’s all this megillah of
knocking Coke about in the news
papers and so on, without even
having the facts straight?
You know, it’s all right to
carry a big stick. But don’t forget
the other part — walk softly.
That’s important, too.
Our family discussed the case
against Coke thoroughly at dinner
last night. We decided until some
body proves something, well,
thank you very much, w r e’ll just
keep on pausing and refreshing.
I was surprised at the intelli
gent question-and-answer period
the topic provoked with the kids.
Our David asked: “Mom, what
about Coca Cola’s stockholders’’

Aren’t some of them Jewish?”
“Of course,” I replied . . . “And
what about their employees?”
“Same,” I said.
“Well then,” contributed Deb
bie, “they certainly wouldn’t de
liberately go out to hurt Israel,
would they?” Doesn’t make
sense at all, we agreed.
Like many other fine American
companies, Coca Cola is a trust

proved otherwise. At our house
we certainly don’t intend to let
a family friend become victim to
unfounded rumors and over-zeal
ous data diggers. cl 966
