ITAMAR
talent, the New York Times had
this to say recently:
Itamar is a Biblical Hebrew
term meaning “island of palm
trees.’’ The singer, who uses only
his first name, is a wiry, intense
young counter-tenor who recent
ly arrived in this country.
Itamar, 25 years old, is one of
eight sons of a retired Tel Amu
cantor. His father, he says, was
broad-minded and raised no ob
jection to his straying from lit
urgical music. For three years
Itamar performed with the
Nachal Troupe, an entertainment
branch of a soldier-farmer corps.
Then he became a featured
singer with Inbal, the Israeli
dance-theatre company. He tour
ed Europe early this year in an
Inbal production of “The Story
of Ruth."
His songs are a mixed bag of
Hebrew favorites. “Hora Mam-
tera” is a dance-tempoed tribute
to the water sprinklers that give
life to the land. “Ta’am Haman"
and “Gizratech’ are love themes
with lilting airs.
Itamars tour deforce is "Dabri
Shir,” a prayer-based Yemenite
song, in which he accompanies
himself on a Miriam drum. The
Arabic-flavored melody gives
full play to the tenor’s virtuoso
technique; trills, slides and shift
ing dynamics are carried off with
skill. It is all wrapped up in
dramatic facial gestures and an
effective mood-building presen
tation.

The play, sponsored by the
Shearith Israel Couples Club,
will be an exciting theatrical ex
perience that “you don’t even

ical to ridiculous hospital attire

quences will be spectacular, and

pertly vitalized by Dale Leven-
steim, Myra Medintz, Fran Lan
dau, Barbara Weingrad, Leon
Tuck, Leon Socol, Herman Gross

cesses, is directing the produc
