US Agrees to Sell
Jets to Israel
WASHINGTON (JTA) — A traint” of the United States con-
NO. 21
State Department spokesman con
firmed that the United States
has agreed to sell “tactical” mil
itary aircraft to Israel.
The planes were reported to be
A-4 Skyhawk attack'bombers of
the type now used by Navy air
craft carriers in raids on North
Viet Nam. The spokesman, Rob
ert McCloseky, did not specify
the model or number of the
planes to be provided to Israel.
He said he could confirm that
the United States had agreed to
a military sales arrangement with
Israel to include a limited num
ber of tactical aircraft. He added
that this decision reflected “our
due regard for security” in the
Middle East. He said the United
States intention was “to avoid a
serious arms imbalance that
would jeopardize area stability.”

Taxes
WASHINGTON (JTA) — The
U. S. Tax Court held that a can
tor who helps to officiate at re
ligious services can exclude from
tax a part of the compensation
received from the congregation
as a rental allowance.
The court rejected the ruling
of the Internal Revenue Service
that only a rabbi is a minister
of the gospel” entitled to such
tax benefit. The Service had con
tended that a cantor is a min
ister of music” who does not
qualify. The tax court ruled that
a center also has spiritual duties
entitling him to such tax bene
fits.

cerning military equipment sup
ply to the Middle East, he re
minded reporters of the “con
tinued massive Soviet sales of
arms to certain countries in the
Middle East which have tended
to intensify the arms imbalance.”
He added that there was no
connection between the sale of
the jet craft to Israel and sim
ilar sales to Jordan and Saudi
Arabia. He said the Israeli trans-
ation grew out of legitimate de
fense needs of Israel.
He said that the conditions
governing the sale to Israel were
the usual commitments under
United States laws pertaining to
assurances that arms still will not
be used aggressively or transferr
ed to a third party.
He said the United States
would continue to strive for
agreed limitations on the arms
buildup in the Middle East.
Newsmen sought a definition
of offensive arms in view of re
ports that bombers were involved.
Mr. McCloskey replied that de
fensive arms might be regarded
as arms supplied to a country for
defensive purposes.
A question was raised about
whether the sale deprived the
Navy of reserve aircraft. Assur
ances were given by Government
sources that the decision would
not have been taken to supply
Israel unless surplus aircraft
were available. Mr. McCloskey
called “erroneous and mislead
ing” reports from Cairo as to the
type of aircraft provided to Is
rael.
It was indicated that the agree
ment to provide the jet bombers
to Israel was reached some time
ago.
