BEHIND UN SCENES By David Horowitz
Israeli Adjustment Complete
Special From Israel
TEL AVIV (WUP)—Within a
span of less than two weeks,
your correspondent succeeded in
traversing this entire little but
dynamic State, meeting Israelis
with many of them in their plea
sant homes, and what impressed
him most during this his eighth
visit to the land of the Bible was
the phenomenal way in which
they have adjusted themselves to
the new life and new climate of
the reborn State. It seemed that
each and every one of them had
found his or her niche here.
What appeared even more im
portant to this writer was the
fact that the Jewish people here
—a true melting-pot representing
a conglomeration of people from
some 85 nations—have managed
somehow to blend themselves
into a h omogenuous whole, all
of them getting along in mutual
business transactions in a man
ner that has exploded the myth
that Jews can never find agree
ment among themselves.
families in need are helped.
In short, Israel has come of
age. She is a successfully func
tioning State having to contend
with all the problems any sov
ereign state has to contend with.
But Israel is different from any
other state. It is a Jewish State,
totally Hebraic in nature. A
Jew here can feel at home.
The Third Hebrew Common
wealth has risen in its glory, and
the words of the Prophets are
being fulfilled. And this is only
the beginning.

Still more important is that the
greater majority of Israelis—the
cobbler, the tailor, the farmer,
the butcher, the barber, the la
borer, the office worker, etc. —
are happily content in their jobs.
There’s no grudgery or lack of
interest. Indeed, the spirit in
which the Israeli does his work
—no matter what it is—is un
equalled anywhere in the world.
When we consider that the ma
jority of Israelis came here either
out of the ashes of the holocaust
or from the oppressing persecu
tions of the Arab lands almost
penniless, most of them sick and
wear}’, broken in spirit, one can
not help but wonder at the mi
raculous transformation that has
taken place in human lives dur
ing such a short period of time.
There are many answers. One
is that Israel is truly a country
of miracles. It was so in Bible
days and it is so today. And it is
the Holy Land, the land of the
Prophets. It is no wonder, then,
that the climate of this land
should be such as to be conduc
ive to healing — healing of the
spirit and the body. The air here
is crystal-clear and refreshing—
there’s no smog in Israel any
where.
Some 100,000,000 trees, planted
by loving and caressing Jewish
hands during the past few dec
ades on the previously-barren
mountain-tops and vales now
send forth a new fragrance of
fresh oxygen all through the
country. Even the largest cities,
Jerusalem, Haifa and Tel Aviv,
have been beautified with all
kinds of trees and shrubbery.
Hardly a house is without them.
The foliage has brought back
into life all kinds of birds whose
lovely songs awake and greet
you each dawn—a time in which
most Irsaelis rise to pursue their
daily tasks.
Of course, Israel is still faced
with many problems. At the pre
sent time, unemployment to a
degree has hit the country. In
formed leaders here, however,
say that it is only a temporary
phase; building activities have
slackened. And then there are
the continuous frontier incidents.
Israelis, accustomed to the worst
that life can give, take all this
in stride. By nature, this cor
respondent is pleased to note,
they are a happy-go-lucky peo
ple, fearless of the future. They
have laid the foundation of a
sound and stable nation, and such
a nation can sustain some set
backs. There's no tightening of
belts. No one starves. The few
