Letter To
The Editor
Dear Adolph,
In many Jewish communities
of this country, some of our co
religionists claim to be so busy
that they have no time to be
present even at the Yahrzeit serv
ice for their parents and the Syn
agogues have great difficulty to
get the required quorum (Min-
van) for the daily services.
I cull the following from the
June 1966 issue of the “Jewish
Digest” article entitled “Second
Man at City Hall, New York,”
viz.:
"Robert Price, the 33-year-old.
lawyer, is Mayor John Lind
say's confidant and one of
New York City’s tivo Deputy
Mayors. Although Price has to
work on the Sabbath, he is “not
happy about it." and does not
think it is appropriate. He ob
serves Kashruth, and lays tefilin
(phylacteries) every morning.
He is a member of the Park Ave
nue Synagogue (Conservative),
and has just accepted the chair
manship of the Gorertiment and
Civil Service Division of the
United Jeu-ish Appeal."
Here, the famous injunction
given in Talmud (Volume Nedar-
im 81a3: “Take heed of the chil
dren of the year, for from them
will come great learning and
knowledge” has been proven and
confirmed again. Of modest origin
but of almost annoying brilliance
and making top grades. Price
zipped through all the schools he
was in. including college and
various other tests. He was born
to immigrant parents, hailing
originally from Russia who until
1959 owned the Park Lane Dairy.
When in 1959 Daitch-Shopwell
bought up the block that housed
the Park Lane Dairy, his father
worked as an efficiency expert
for the Carlyle Shirt Co., while
his mother still works as manager
of the Bronx Telephone Answer
ing Service.
Readers will do well to ponder
ever it . . .
