BEHIND UN SCENES — By David Horowitz
Visiting Seven Member States
UNITED NATIONS (WUP) -
Your correspondent has just re
turned to this headquarters from
a five-week visit to seven UN
member states— Israel, Turkey,
Italy, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia,
Denmark and Sweden—and what
stood out most significantly and
made a lasting impression were
the similarities in outlook, in hope
for world peace, in desires to live
and let live, shown and expressed
by the man in the street as well
as by officials of government in
all these countries.
In brief, the peoples in these
countries — and this must hold
true in most nations around the
globe—still affected by the hor
rible scars of the Hitlerian hol
ocaust, find it impossible to con
ceive of any possibility of another
war'and, despite the current crisis
in Vietnam, in Cyprus and the
smoldering fires bedevilling the
Mideast, they hold to the strong
belief that the political leaders of
both East and West will never
allow themselves to fall into the
dangerous and fatal road of mil
itary conflict in the settlement of
disputes. Hence, the United Na
tions, in their eyes, remains the
one hope of humanity, and they
feel certain that the world’s
leaders'—knowing full well what
a nuclear inferno will do to the
globe—will resort to the confer
ence table in the settlement of all
differences.
Jet air travel has made the
world very small, and it seems
to this writer that the greatest
“ambassador” for peace is not the
Foreign Minister or head of State

Presidents’ Conference
Revises Structure
NEW YORK (JTAI — The
Conference of Presidents of Ma
jor American Jewish Organiza
tions has voted to transform itself
from a group of individual pres
idents or organizations to an
over-all body entitled to speak on
behalf of the “overwhelming ma
jority" of Jews in this country
on problems concerning Jews in
various parts of the world, it was
announced by Dr. Joachim Prinz,
chairman of the Conference.
Dr. Prinz indicated that the re
organized body, representing 21
major American Jewish groups,
will now concern itself with the
whole range of international
Jewish issues. Since its establish
ment in 1955 as an informal group
of presidents of 17 American
Jewish organizations, the Confer
ence dealt primarily with threats
to Israel's security. The American
Jewish Committee is not a mem
ber of the Conference, but Dr.
Prinz expressed hope that it
could .join it.

country mingling with the peo
ples and exchanging pleasantries
and even discussing politics as
well as art and music in the
cafes, the theatres and at ancient
sites. Millions of tourists, coming
from all parts of the globe,
among them a great many stu
dents, yearly visit several coun
tries only to find out that, wher
ever they go, people everywhere
are basically alike.
And while tourists indeed act
as “ambassadors of peace,” the
airlines carrying them so swiftly
and safely must be looked upon
as the "doves of peace.” This
writer had the good fortune of
flying to the seven-mentioned
countries, directly or indirectly,
via a Pan American World Air
ways Clipper which, for comfort,

Pan Am has behind it a re
markable history. Since the in
ception of the airline in 1927 with
a short 90-mile flight to Havana
and then flights to Central and
South America, it has pioneered
and been the first in every aero
nautic venture. Under the in

1V0 Israel Worry
JERUSALEM (JTA) — Israeli
observers found little to worry
about in the public statements on
the Middle East made by Soviet
Premier Alexei Kosygin during
his eight-day visit to Egypt.
The Soviet leader made his
views known twice—once during
an address to the Egyptian Na
tional Assembly in Cairo and
again in the joint communique
issued at the close of his visit. In
neither case did the Soviet Pre
mier refer to Israel by name, to
the apparent annoyance of his
Egyptian hosts and apparently in
line with a softening in recent
months of Russia’s stiff anti-Is
rael stance.
He expressed support for the
“legitimate and indivisible” rights
of the Arab refugees and for the
“struggle by the Arab states
against the aggressive intrigues
of imperialist forces seeking to
exploit the Palestine problem to
increase tension in the Middle
East.” He also warned against the
dangers of a nuclear arms race
in the Middle East.
The statements were described
here as routine for the Soviets
which have been made for a long
time.
airline, Pan Am has today
emerged into the globe-spanning,
complex system it is. Trippe him
self is a veteran flier. In the late
20’s, he flew the original scout
ing flights over treacherous seas
and perilous jungles. Later he
pioneered the multiple engine air
craft of the 19,'iO’s and 1910’s as
also ihe long-range ocean-span
ning Flying Clippers of that era.
“Clipper”—so termed from the
early U. S. sailing ships which
made American history m both
peace and war—is a trade name
of Pan Am and has so been since
the “American Clipper” was
launched in Washington in 1931.
Mr. Trippe himself, who gave the
name, felt a close link between
his aircraft and the sailing
vessels of a century ago.
An idealist, Mr. Trippe is cur
rently engaged in the execution
of another “first” m airline travel
—the building of gigantic super
sonic Clippers to accommodate
over 700 passengers and which
will be able to traverse the ocean
in less than three hours. For
Trippe, this is a labor of love and
his goal is low-cost travel rates.
