LETTER
TO THE EDITOR
Dear Adolph,
Throughout my travels and
stays over many countries and
lands of the world, I am not
ashamed to confess that my visit
to Camp Barney Medintz was the
first time that I ever saw a sum
mer camp where Jewish boys
and girls can spend a few weeks
of vacation in healthy surround
ings, away from the cities and
their artificial life, where they
can see and observe nature and
admire and appreciate the night
ly dome of heaven with its my
riads of studded luminiaries, the
stars, the poetry of heaven! Those
responsible for its building and
financing, such as the Alterman
Brothers and the many other
contributors are to be highly
commended for their great gen
erosity and thoughtful foresight!
The Synagogue, a place of con
gregational prayer and public
worship, has always been the
spiritual home of the Jew,
throughout his history. It had
been in existence long before the
destruction of the Temple. It is
generally assumed that the Syna
gogue had its beginning during
the Babylonian captivity in the
sixth century before the Com
mon Era. There were many
Synagogues in Egypt during the
third century B.C.E. Our Talmud
ic sages praised congregational
worship in the most elaborate
terms. It has been said “that in
their long history, the Jewish
people have done scarcely any
thing more wonderful than to
create the Synagogue, and Juda
ism gave to the world not only
the fundamental ideas of the
great monotheistic religions but
also the institutional forms in
which they have perpetuated and
propagated themselves!”
Erwin Zaban, should therefore
be highly praised for his novel
and great idea of celebrating the
occasion of the silver wedding
anniversary of himself and his
wife Doris, by dedicating a
chapel at the Barney Medintz
Camp. At the dedication on
June 12, many hundreds of en
thusiastic friends and congre
gants from Atlanta and from
from many near-by places were
present, and sincerely congratu
lated the jubilants.
However, when I glanced at
the program, I was somewhat
disappointed at its contents; for
it lacked the principal object for
which a place of prayer, be it a
synagogue or chapel, is built. I
witnessed many, many dedica
tions of various Jewish institu
tions in many lands, and the first
indispensable item on the pro
gram, was always and foremost,
the Afternoon Service — THE
MINHAH—which also is the
shortest, yet, according to tradi
tion as stated in Talmud (Bera-

choth 6b), the most important
service of the day. Here this part
was entirely missing! I was even
more surprised when informed
that two Rabbis were consulted
before and about the program
and neither of them suggested or
even mentioned its existence for
such an occasion. . .
No person will begin any
building before consulting an
architect. The building of a Jew
ish house of worship needs the
consultation of a Rabbi, because
certain rules and requirements
are essential in its structure. It
is true, we live in a modern age,
but not everything modern is
applicable to a Synagogue. A
Jewish House of worship must
have walls and windows. Said
Rabbi Hiyya bar Aba and Rabbi
Johahan; "A man should not
pray in a house that has no
windows and walls” (Berichoth
36b). There is also stated even
the number of windows required,
twelve in number. “And a Syna
gogue that has no windows is
not a place to worship in”
(Zohar). The reason is obvious:
Prayers require “KAWANAH"
(inner disposition) and “Prayer
without Kavvanah is like a body
without a Neshamah” (soul).
RADIO SERIES
ON BIBLE SET
Mark Van Doren and Maurice
Samuel, two of the country’s
leading men of letters, explore
the Biblical world of dreams,
visions and prophecies in a
series of 15 weekly dialogues on
the NBC Radio Network’s “Eter
nal Light” program.
The series, which began June
19, can be heard at 10:30 p.m.
Sundays on WSB Radio (750).
An NBC Public Affairs pres
entation, the program is pro
duced in cooperation with the
Jewish Theological Seminary of
America.
The new series, titled “Dreams
and Visions in the Bible,” will
deal not only with the phenom
ena but with the interpretation.
DR. GOLDSTEIN
CITED BY USO
Dr. Marvin Goldstein was
among four USO Council mem
bers who were to be honored in
a special ceremony at Atlanta
Stadium on Wednesday, June
22. The awards were to be pre
sented by Vice Mayor Sam Mas-
sell preceding the Atlanta Braves-
Philadelphia Phillies baseball
game.
The ceremonies were in cele
bration of the USO’s silver anni
versary and included posting of
the colors by an honor guard
representing all five branches of
the service. Dr. Goldstein, Earl
Mann, Dr. Rufus E. Clement and
T. Clack Tucker were recognized
for their distinguished service to
the men and women of the Arm
ed Forces through the Atlanta
USO.
How can worshippers concentrate
while exposed to the open where
thousands of things will attract
their attention. Prayers are best
near a wall (Isaiah 38, 2). The
architects have certainly done a
marvellous job in constructing a
piece of art and beauty, but not
for Jewish worship. Frank Fier-
man explained the object of the
hole in center top of the roof
astronomically as a Solar Clock—
Sun Dial—which was very clever
and appropriate. To my mind it
was made for the purpose of
helping the prayers in their
ascent to heaven. . .
JACOB L. FRIEND
While we make no claim to
possessing anything like Mr.
Friend’s erudition in matters of
Talmud and tradition, it does
seem that there Ls something
particularly appropriate in the
idea of campers worshiping sur
rounded by the beauties of
nature.
