stress both theoretical and
practical aspects combined with
observation and study tours.
The majority of courses are
conducted in French. English
or Spanish, though when neces
sary, courses in Persian and
Turkish have been used. Effort
is made to acquaint students
with the basic elements of
Hebrew, and in the case of
students who are in Israel for
long periods,.'special summer
ulpanim (intensive language
courses) are organized.
The training programme
falls roughly into the follow
ing categories: Agriculture.

Special interest has been
shown in cooperative principles
which in Israel have been suc
cessfully applied to agricul
tural settlement, consumers'
and marketing associations and
industrial growth. Israel’s flex
ible and variable approach to
economic development pro
vides an interesting prototype
for other developing countries
faced with the same problems
of limited resources and a need
for all-out mobilization of the
national economy.
The Histadrut (Israel Gen
eral Federation of Labour)
has opened the Afro-Asian In
stitute for Labour Studies and
Cooperation and the Centre of
Cooperative Studies for Latin
Americans in Tel Aviv where
trade union and cooperative
movement leaders are trained
in the theory and practice of
cooperation and economic and
social development.
In 1961 at the closing ses
sion of a six-week Seminar on
the Role of Women in a De
veloping Society, the sixty-six
women present from twenty-
two countries of Africa, Asia
and the Mediterranean, resolv
ed to establish "a centre in
Israel (for) promoting future
national and international ac
tivities for the advancement of
women.” As a result The In
ternational Training Centre
for Community Services was
opened in Haifa in 1962 under
the auspices of the Depart
ment for International Co
operation and the Haifa Muni
cipality.
The object of the Centre is
to help women in developing
countries acquire knowledge
and skills to enable them to
assume responsibility in com
munity services and in the
general upbuilding of their
