Joe Gerson Announces
For Georgia Legislature
Joe Gerson, Atlanta insurance
man, has announced his candi
dacy for legislator on the Demo
cratic ticket of the 123rd Dis
trict, Post 2, which includes all
of Fulton County. This office is
presently held by Jack Etheridge
who is not seeking re-election.
Mr. Gerson has been a life in
surance representative for the
Equitable Life Assurance Society
for the last 26 years and is a
member of his company’s “Hall
of Fame.” This organization
comprises Equitable’s leading
producers and has only approx
imately fifty members out of
over 7000 representatives in the
United States.
“Joe,” as he is widely known,
is a native of Atlanta and attend
ed the public schools of Atlanta.
He is a graduate of the Univer
sity of Georgia and has lived in
Fulton County all his life. He is
a Life and Qualifying Member
of the Million Dollar Round
Table, a member of the Atlanta
Life Underwriters Assn, and past
president of the Life Insurance
Leaders of Georgia.
A veteran of World War II, he
is a member of Jewish War Vet
erans and of the sports commit
tee of the Atlanta Chamber of
Commerce. In 1952 he was named
by the Chamber of Commerce
and Time magazine as one of the
one hundred young citizens of
Atlanta most likely to succeed.
Mr. Gerson is married. He and

his wife Evelyn have three chil
dren. Arleen, Randv and Shel
ley.
Active in community affairs,
Mr. Gerson has served as presi
dent of the Progressive Club, a
ci’rector of the Standard Club,
director of the AJCC, president of
B’nai B'rith: also first vice pres
ident of the University of Geor
gia Alumni Society, trustee of the
university's student educational
fund, trustee of the Scottish Rite
Hospital and president of the At
lanta Touchdown Club. He has
been a PTA board member, na
tional president of Tau Epsilon
Phi fraternity, whose house on
the University of Georgia cam
pus was dedicated in his honor;
co-chairman of the Fulton Coun
ty Cancer Fund and a director
of his synagogue.
Mr. Gerson has always liked
to work for youth and sports and
has been an advisor of several
youth clubs and at the present
time is president of the Braves
“400” Booster Club. This organ
ization is dedicated to fostering
baseball from the little leagues
through the majors.
In announcing for the office of
legislator of the 123rd District,
Post 2 Mr. Gerson made this
statement and pledge . . .
“1 believe that Atlanta, Fulton
County and Georgia will make
terrific progress during the next
four years and I desire to be a
part of this outstanding prog
ress.
“I believe that education for
all people should be greatly ad
vanced. In my work I have seen
too many people, white and
Negroes, who have been unable
to sign their names.
“I desire to see the expressway
system completed as soon as pos
sible. It is my belief that if spec
ial effort were put on the High
way Department to complete the
perimeter expressway around
