AJECOMCE DAY CAMP ENDS
SUCCESSFUL SUMMER
Having its finest camping sea
son yet, Ajecomce Day Camp
heads into the final week with
many exciting events taking
place.
This week, we had a all-camp
cookout with hamburgers and all
the trimmings. Group overnights
and late cookout suppers high
lighted this week’s activities and
will continue into the final days
of camp.
Camp Pioneer and Camp Pre
Tween will visit Lake Spivey for
fun in the sun and amusement
rides.
PARENTS VISIT DAY CAMP
On Thursday, August 11th,
parents of day campers enjoyed
a special visit planned around
the theme “Around the World in
80 Days.” Parents were welcom
ed by their children and were
enabled to see the program as
well as the beautiful camp set
ting.
This has been a wonderful
summer for Ajecomce Day Camp
and we anxiously look forward
to an ■ even more successful
camp season next summer.

by all of us. May his soul rest in
peace. I hope all of our members

The Spirit of
Gamp Barney
by Edward Robbins,
Director, Camp
' Barney Medintz
Many of our visitors seem to
have difficulty understanding
what is meant by Informal
Jewish Education” particularly
in the camp setting. So many
adults who are interested in dis
cussing the Jewish component of
the program ask, “Do you have
Hebrew classes?”
When told that our program is
informal and aims at affecting
feelings by providing postive ex
periences along Jewish lines,
these persons invariably appear
to be skeptical and nod their
heads in approval only to be
polite.
What is the method and pur
pose of a program of “informal”
Jewish education? Wouldn’t we
do better to amuse the children
with horseback riding and skiing
half of the day and seat them in
a classroom the other half? Our
experience with children tells us
that this is not the answer.
OVERCOMING RESISTANCE
At camp we find that we must
first overcome the resistance and
undo the negative attitudes to
ward things Jewish which chil
dren bring to us. We have asked
ourselves over and over again
why this resentment toward
Judaism? The answer over and
over comes back to us—“Judaism
as it is taught today just isn’t
fun.”
How do we make Judaism fun
at Camp Barney Medintz? Jew
ish music is included around
campfires, hikes, dramatic pre
sentations, special events and
holiday programs. Jewish stories
and folktales are told during
story periods, rest hour, and be
fore bedtime. Creative sermons,
poems, songs, prayers, playlets
by campers are encouraged and
much recognition is given for
achievement in this area.
Groups look forward with
pride for the special preparation
of the dining hall for the Sab
bath. Making creative decora
tions using natural products,
wild floral arrangements, etc.,
are part of the fun of being Jew
ish. Clean white clothing, a
smell of freshness about the
whole camp, a feeling of differ
ence permeate the pre-Sabbath
preparation. Everyone is in a
hurry.
They must be on time to greet
the Sabbath. It is the only day
when girls are allowed to put
their hair in rollers (rollers—a
necessary evil of the 20th cen
tury American teenager). Broth
ers and sisters who never look at
each other during the entire
week are looking for each other
tonight for they are going to sit
together and eat the Friday night
dinner as they would at home.
The meal is special, the deco
rations are special, and after the
meal, starts the slow walk of 400
people across the beautiful Lake
Wendy to the inspiring and en
chanting Doris Zaban Chapel.
SABBATH IS SPECIAL
It is now twilight, the reflec
tion of the chapel in the still
waters of Lake Wendy combined
with the echoed voices of the
ehifdren gives one a feeling that
something beautiful and good is
happening.
Services will have been totally
prepared by the campers. The
service combines appropriate
Judaism A(
Medintz
traditional prayers with new and
original ones.
The services are over, back
across the dam come boys and
girls, hand in hand with their
counselors, singing and hum
ming.
A relaxed schedule is followed
on the Sabbath. The rising hour
is later—all heavy work and
project activity is eliminated.
The program consists of walks,
music, story hour, discussion
groups and simple games. In
discussion groups attention is
given to current Jewish affairs
geared to the age group of the
camper. Discussion is of current
events throughout the world that
pertain to the Jewish people.
We at Camp Barney Medintz
believe that true learning occurs
through pleasure and not pain,
through happiness and not
through sorrow, and through
identification with adults who
have the skills to understand the
moods of children.
These skills tempered with
love create our unequaled oppor
tunity for children to learn to
love and appreciate their heri
tage and their religion.
