Torah Scroll Stolen
TORONTO, (JTA) — A Torah
scroll valued at $1,000 was stolen
from a downtown synagogue in
Toronto on the eve of the Sab
bath. The theft was not discover
ed until a member went to the
ark to take out the Torah for the
reading ceremony. The synago
gue is called the Anshei Luba-
vitch.

From Poker Chips
To ‘Tater Chips

This story is not a commercial,
and it ain’t free advertising
either . . . It’s something we
thought was very interesting,
concerning a fellow with deter
mination and guts . . . This starts
in Trenton, N. J., and the setting
is around a poker table with
seven players . . . You can tell
it’s a small game, ’cause the host
serves a bowl of potato chips and
pretzels and that’s about it . . .
But the potato chips start a con
versation, since they’re so tasty
and different, and the host tells
the other men that some com
pany delivers them door-to-door,
and then goes on to say that he
understands there are some
franchises open in a few states .
. . This starts some thinking
around the table, pretty serious
thinking, you can tell, since
there’s three mis-deals in a row
and then one of the guys over
looks a royal flush . . . The out
come is that the host wins all the
money, and four of the seven
gamblers start inquiring about
the franchises . . .
Those four today are all in the
potato chip business with Charles
Chips, and the lucky guy who
gave me this story now has six
teen trucks going for him in
Georgia . . . His name is Ronald
Urken, and he’s been here in At
lanta about six years now . . .
New York
Hospital Rates
To Jump Up
NEW YORK (JTA) — Seven
Jewish-sponsored hospitals in
New York City raised or indi
cated plans to raise their basic
room rates following a wage in
crease to non-medical and semi-
professional workers
Maimonides Hospital in Brook
lyn announced its room rates
would go up by $8 per day on
August 1. The average daily
charge for a semi-private room
is $75 per day for all services ex
cept private doctors' care. Mont-
efiore Hospital in the Bronx said
it would raise its rates by $5 a
day per room.
Long Island Jewish Hospital,
the Jewish Hospital of Brooklyn,
Mount Sinai Hospital, Jewish
Memorial Hospital and Beth
Israel also indicated plans to
raise rates. All but Jewish Mem
orial Hospital are affiliates of the
Federation of Jewish Philanth
ropies of New York.
All of the city’s voluntary hos
pitals with agreements with
Local 1139 of the Drug and Hos
pital Employes Union were ex
pected to pass on the increased
costs to their patients.

Besides his wife Maddy, he’s now
added to his line three kinds of
pretzels, an assortment of cookies
and candies, and more impor
tant, a daughter named Marcy
and a son called Steven . . . Ron
has a new warehouse in Decatur
that is always packed with
goodies, and business keeps get
ting better . . . One of the amaz
ing things about this venture is
that he does no advertising, yet
the phone rings constantly with
calls from new customers . . . The
routemen are actually in busi
ness for themselves, so their in
come is really up to them . . .
We’re putting the chips before
the potatoes, tho—let’s back up
and tell you how Ron got start
ed .. . He went out on a route
himself at first, knocking on
doors and leaving samples, and it
was tough going for a while . . .
Then gradually his customers got
hooked on the habit, and word of
mouth and taste started spread
ing the gospel . . . Things start
ed mushrooming, and before you
could peel a potato (I hate to say
it) he was really in the chips . .
. We hope he stays with us for
good, and, listening to him,
nothing short of a potato famine
could make him leave Atlanta . .
. One thing I found out about
this fellow is that he is a mighty
good business man — do you
know, I sat with him for over
two hours in his office and not
once did he offer me a potato
chip! . . . Either they’re so good
he hates to give them away, or
else he’s the tightest guy I’ve
ever interviewed! . . . That’s
something we’ll never know . . .
Anyway, lots of luck to the Ur-
kens, and don’t call me for his
phone number—it’s in the book,
and if the line is busy (the odds
on that are 3 to 1) keep trying.
