Few US Children
In Jewish Schools
Only 33 Percent
JERUSALEM (JTA)— Dr. Wil
liam Chomsky, faculty chairman
of the Gratz College of Phila
delphia, asserted here that only
53 percent of American Jewish
children attend some Jewish
school and that more than half
of them attend only Sunday
school.
Speaking at the 40th anniver
sary convention of the National
Council for Jewish Education of
the United States, which was at
tended by 168 American Jewish
educators, Dr. Chomsky added
that in spite of the low percent
age, the number of young peo
ple attending Jewish high schools
and Jewish teachers institutes or
studying Judaica and Hebrew
was increasing in the United
States. He said this was “a sign
that in the hearts of American
Jews there still whispers the
ember of Jewish consciousness."
The American Jewish educator
also asserted that American
Jewry was paying only ‘‘lip
service" to Jewish education.
‘‘Amid all their fine talk about
the value of Jewish education,”
he charged, ‘the Jewish federa
tions continue to support it
stingily to the extent of only 10
percent of their total expendi
ture."
The convention which opened
this week is scheduled to last two
weeks. Its theme is ‘‘50 Years of
Jewish Education in the United
States—Retrospect and Prospect.”

SILVER
LIMING
By DR SAMUEL SILVER
(A Seven Arts Feature)
At last it’s going to happen.
This October the Statue of Lib
erty turns 80.
From the outset the base of
the Statue was
supposed to
house exhib i t s
and displays.
But those plans
never material
ized.
True, the ped
estal contai n s
the words of
Emma Lazarus
about welcoming the people
branded by tyrants as “refuse.”
Even that poem is not prop
erly highlighted and many of the
millions that go there don’t see
it.
Now, at last, the Statue will
be enhanced by another remark
able sight-seeing attraction.
It will be the American Muse
um of Immigration.
The museum will house grip
ping displays of how this nation
has been enriched by those who
came here.
It will tell of the tribulations
and the triumphs of the new
comers.
It will even include a section
glorifying the Indians, indicating
that once they too came to this
continent from some other place.
A little more respect for the In
dians is badly needed here.
In a sense, the Museum could
only be built after the repeal of
those harsh immigration laws
which prompted many to say that
Lady Liberty had no right even
to hold up her head let alone
her hand.
But now that a policy of im
migration closer to the tradition
al spirit of American hospitality
is in effect, the Museum is most
fitting.
The federal government is
matching private dollars in un
derwriting the project. So if you
want to double your money, send
a gift to the Museum treasurer,
Alexander Hamilton, 15 Pine
Street, New York City 10005.
And, of course, there will be
one segment of the exposition
devoted to Judaism. Jewish im
migrants will be called Jews, and
many memorabilia will be on dis
play, some provided by the
America Jewish Historical Socie
ty, some by the American Jew
ish Archives.
Or if you have an object rep
resentative of the valor of the
Jewish immigrants, you can sub
mit it to the Museum; they’ll re
turn it if they don’t opt it. The
address is 28 E. 20th Street, New
York City 10003.
At last, the Lady at the Golden
Door will even be more adorable.
