Louis Miller Dies in Huntsville;
Pioneer JDC Fund Raiser
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Louis
Miller, 71, a resident of this city
for 49 years and long promin
ent in the region’s communal and
business affairs, died here sud
denly July 18.
Mr. Miller, president of L.
Miller and Son, Inc., was a
member of Temple B’nai Sholom,
had helped activate the B’nai
B’rith Esora Lodge and held vari
ous offices in both. He was a
lifetime member of Helion Lodge
No. I, F&AM, having been treas
urer for 20 years.
He also held membership in
the Scottish Rite, Zamora Tem
ple of the Shrine and Royal Arch
Masons. He had been active in
the United Jewish Appeal, both
nationally and locally, the Amer
ican Red Cross, the Community
Chest and other charities.
Mr. Miller was a pioneer in
UJA activities, having worked
with the Joint Distribution Com
mittee since 1926 as chief fund
raiser for Huntsville and sur
rounding areas. In 1959, he re
ceived the Award of Merit from
the UJA.
Other recognitions of Mr. Mil
ler’s various services included an
award in 1946 from the Treasury
Department for services rendered
the War Finance Program in
World War II; the Grand Cross
of Color for distinguished service
to the Order of the Rainbow for
Girls in 1955; a citation for com
munity service in 1957 from the
Huntsville - Madison County
Givers Fund, and appointment in
1957 to the Madison County Com
mittee on Employment of the
Physically Handicapped.
Mr. Miller was bom in Minsk,
Russia, in 1895 and came to this
country in 1913. Funeral services
were held at Temple B’nai Shol-
Greenberg Unveiling
Unveiling ceremonies in mem
ory of Mrs. Anna L. Greenberg
of Atlanta will be held at 4:00
p.m., Sunday, Aug. 21, at Green
wood Cemetery. Cantor Robert
Ungar will officiate.
Mrs. L. A. Merlin
Mrs. Chei Riva Merlin, 93, of
Miami, formerly of Atlanta, died
Thursday, Aug. 12.
Funeral services were held in
Atlanta Sunday. Aug. 14, with
Rabbi Harry H. Epstein and Can
tor Isaac Goodfriend officiating.
Interment was in Greenwood
Cemetery.
Mrs. Merlin was the widow of
Lazear Aaron Merlin who died
in 1959. The couple, among the
pioneer citizens of Atlanta, were
the matriarch and patriarch of
the large Merlin family. Both
were active in the religious and
civic life of the community. Mr.
Merlin had been a director of the
Lubavicher Yeshiva and was
honorary lifetime president of
Anshe S’fard Synagogue and a
lifetime member of the Home for
the Aged.
Mrs. Merlin was a member of
Hadassah. Farband and Zionist
Organization of America.
Survivors include sons I. Lewis
Merlin of Atlanta and Theodore
Merlin, Jacksonville, daughters
Mrs. Edward Merlin. Miami
Beach, and Mrs. Joe Epstein, At
lanta. a number of grandchildren,
great-grandchildren, nieces and
nephews.

He is survived by his wife,
Elsie Ratner Miller, a son, Israel
Bernard Miller, both of Hunts
ville; a sister, Tania Weinberg,
of Brooklyn, N. Y., and three
grandchildren.
Stanley L. Gumble
Stanley L. Gumble, Cincinnati,
father of Stanley K. Gumble of
Atlanta, died Friday, Aug. 12, in
an automobile wreck near Lex
ington, Ky.
Funeral and interment were
held August 15 in Cincinnati.
He was a retired merchandis
ing executive.
A memorial fund is being set
up in his name at Jewish Hos
pital, Cincinnati, where he had
run a philanthropic gift shop the
last four years.
Other survivors include his
wife, the former Hortense Kauf
man.
Henry B. Hamburger
Henry Bertran Hamburger, 54,
of Atlanta died Sunday, Aug. 14.
Funeral services were held
August 15 with Rabbi Richard
Lehrman officiating. Interment
was in Crest Lawn Memorial
Park.
Mr. Hamburger, owner of the
Old Heidelberg Restaurant and
the Northside Delicatessen, was
bom in Germany and came to
the United States in 1938. He
lived in Atlanta all but five years
since that time.
He was a member of the Tem
ple, the Atlanta Chamber of
Commerce, the Georgia Bar and
Restaurant Assn., the National
Restaurant Assn, and the Nation
al Association of Fancy Foods.
Survivors include his wife, the
former Martha Solomon; a
daughter. Miss Judy Suzanne
Hamburger; two sons. Harold Joe
and Steven Melvin Hamburger,
all of Atlanta; mother, Mrs.
Hilda Hamburger, and two sis
ters, Mrs. Walter Kaufmann and
Mrs. Joe Jacobs, all of New York
City.
Joe Sifen
Joe Sifen, 80, of Franklin, Va.,
died Saturday, Aug. 13. He was
the father of Paul Sifen of At
lanta.
Funeral services were held
Monday. Aug. 15. with interment
in Portsmouth, Va.
Survivors also include his wife
and another son. Melvin, of Nor
folk; a daughter. Mrs. Bernard
Mazur of Baltimore. II grand
children and one great-grand
child.
Joseph Schuss
ST. PETERSBURG — Joseph
Schuss, 74. a resident of this city
for the past 10 years, died here
August l.
Funeral services were conduct
ed by Rabbi David J. Susskind
of Temple Beth El.
Mr. Schuss was born in New
York City. He had been active
here in the Senior Friendship
Club, having been chairman of
its auditing committee.
Survivors are his wife, Ruth;
a son. Jack. Skillman. N. J.; a
daughter. Mrs. Myra Finkelstein.
Westport. Conn.; a sister, Mrs.
Florence Heckler, New York
City, and seven grandchildren.

Mr. and Mrs. Abraham Zaid-
man hosted the rehearsal sup
per on August 6 for their son
Bernard and his bride-to-be,
Laura Vicki Mandell. Guests for
the supper at Ember’s Imperial
House included the wedding par
ty, families and these out-of-
town guests—Miss Mitzi Hirsch-
en, Miss Dotty Hirschen and
Harry Hirschen, Bronx, N. Y.;
Miss Patricia Allen, Miss Frayda
Zlotschewer and Bill Slobodkin,
Orlando.

Betty Allison Shimberg, infant
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Man
dell Shimberg, was named at a
ceremony Friday night, Aug. 5, at
Temple Schaarai Zedek. The
baby was named for her great
grandmother, the late Mrs. M. E.
Edelson of Ironton, O., and her
two grandmothers, Mrs. Anna
Shimberg and Mrs. Karl Fantle.
Friends who assisted at a social
hour following the ceremony
were Mrs. Morris Coolik, Mrs.
Fred Lebos, Mrs: Nathan Marcus,
Mrs. Nathan Poller and Mrs.
David Zielonka.

Sandy and Karlee, of Davenport,

Friends of Mrs. Meyer Carleen
will regret to learn that she is a
patient in Rex Hospital, Raleigh,
N. C. Mr. and Mrs. Carleen were
en route to Washington to visit
their son Barry when she was
rushed to the hospital.

and St. Petersburg chapters, to
gether with the Jewish War Vet
erans Auxiliaries of both citie,*
will sponsor a “Mid-Summer
Night” dance for the veterans at
Bay Pines Hospital on Tuesday,
Aug. 23, at 8:00 p. m. A motor
cade will leave the International
Inn, Tampa, at 7:00 p. m. Mem
bers or friends requiring trans
portation may phone Mrs. Aaron
Berger, 832-4645, or Mrs. Henry
Wind, 226-6971. Members and
friends are asked to either bake
a cake or cookies or donate $1
toward expenses. The Tampa
Policemen's Orchestra under the
leadership of Sgt. A1 Ford will
provide music and a variety

ner of Carrollwood, Tampa, an
nounce the birth of a son, Jon
athan Ian Wittner, on July 29.
The Wittners have two other
sons, Jacob Ben David and
Frederick Tribble. Grandparents
are Mrs. Jacob Wittner of Tam
pa and Mr. and Mrs. Frederick
