For nearly a quarter of a
century a tragic Jewish figure
has stood silent before the tri
bunal of history as it weighs
the guilt or innocence of the
members of the Judenrats, the
Jewish governing councils ap
pointed bv the Nazis in the
ghettos of occupied Poland
during World War II. They
stand accused of being tools of
the Nazis, of collaborating in
the deportation of Jews to the
death camps.
Now for the first time the
world will hear the voice of a
key man among the accused,
Adam Czerniakow. chairman
of the Warsaw Ghetto Juden-
rat, who committed suicide
rather than put his signature
to a Nazi order for mass de
portations. . .
Next to the diaries of the
ghetto historian, Dr. Emanuel
Ringelblum, Czerniakow’s dia
ries are probably the most im
portant record of the Jewish
agony in Warsaw. Not only did
the chairman record every im
portant event in the ghetto
and the substance of his daily
negotiations with the Nazi
rulers, but he also pasted into
his notebooks newspaper clip
pings recording Nazi orders to
the Jews, letters and other
significant documents. These
records are now being pre
pared for publication by a
group of dedicated historians
in Yad V’ shem in Jerusalem. . .
A typical example of the
negative attitude toward Czer
niakow is found in the diary of
Chaim A. Kaplan (recently
published under the title
Scroll of Agony). Under the
date of September 17, 1943. we
read:
“Today a rumor is flying
that Czerniakow. the head of
the Judenrat, committed sui
cide. and that the reason for
his desperate act was the
seventeen edicts which the
conquerors are about to direct
at us. . . To the experts, the
entire story seemed unlikely.
First, who ever heard of a
clever public official doing
something so stupid. . . It is
very doubtful whether Czerni
akow’s worry and pain over
the general misfortune is so
great as to be heartbreaking,
let alone bring him to a state
of spiritual depression so deep
that he would commit suicide.
“As to Czerniakow himself,
he is a mediocre man whose
