the Ringelblum archives there
is a chronicle that describes
that tragic event this way:
“A bitter, black night fell
over the ghetto. Shots were
heard. Each shot took a Jewish
life. . . On that night of the
23rd of July, after a visit from
the Hitler dogs demanding that
he deliver 10,000 J ews for de
portation the next day, Adam
Czerniakow put an end to his
life,” . . ..
On the Warsaw Ghetto's
black day of July 23. some
hours before the Gestapo came
to Czerniakow with the de
mand that he sign the mass
deportation order, he made the
last entry in his diary:
“July 23. 1942—early morn
ing. The community offices.
Wortorf of the deportation
group came to discuss some
matters with me. He exempted
the pupils in the trade schools
as well as the men and women
in the workshops. About the
orphans, he advised me to talk
things over with Hoefle. About
the craftsmen, he asked me to
do the same. To my question
about how many days of the
week deportation actions
would go on, he answered:
"Seven days a week.” In the
city there is a feverish move
ment to create workshops. A
sewing machine can save a
life.
“3 P.M.—At the moment
there are only 4-000 for depor
tation. According to the order,
another 4,000 must be deliver
ed by 4 p.m. Officials have
come to the post office and
ordered all letters and pack
ages sent to the Pawiak (a
jail located inside the ghetto
wall—S.L.S.”)
From the accounts we have
of the events of the 23rd of
July, 1942, in the Warsaw
Ghetto, it is evident that, after
having written this final entry
in his diary, Czerniakow ob
tained an audience with the
Gestapo chief. S. S. Sturm-
bahnfuehrer Herman Hoefle.
He had hoped that he could
gain an exemption from depor
tation for the orphans and the
craftsmen. . .
It is apparent that Hoefle
refused all Czerniakow's re
quests and finally told him the
naked truth about the depor
tations. This was not a “trans
fer to labor,” but a direct trip
to the gas chambers.
Returning to his office in
the Judenrat building. Czerni
akow made no further entries
in his diary. He swallowed
poison. .
His suicide was Czernia-
kow’s last testament to the
Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto
and all the other ghettos, his
warning to harbor no more il
lusions that through work they
could avoid deportation; that,
as he himself had put it. “a
sewing machine can save a
life.”
