These are revealing facts.
That care for the aged and the
sick should require more than
half the gemeinde’s budget is
an indication of the decline of
Austrian Jewry. It shows that
the aged predominate, and as
the upper figures show the
youth are in the smallest
minority.
That accounts for the small
allocations for educational ef
forts. In this context, there is
a lesser need to finance religi
ous services.
Meanwhile, the fact that a
sum. no matter how small, has
been set aside to fight anti-
Semitism, to be on guard
against the re-emerging Nazi
spirit, is proof of an unending
danger that may contribute
towards a continuing disinte
gration of Austrian Jewry.
At recent trials of anti-
Semites, there were anti-Jew-
ish demonstrations in court
rooms in Vienna. They were
disturbing factors in a disturb
ing area, pointing to an in
crease of tensions.
During the last election in
Austria, the anti-Semites were
among the most voluble cam
paigners. One of the candi
dates, the former Socialist In
terior Minister Franz Olah
who had been expelled from
his party, ran on a Progressive
Democratic ticket of his own,
charged his former associates
with treason and murder and
a variety of crimes and was
greeted with howls of approval
from anti-Semitic audiences.
Then there were many anti-
Semitic pamphlets, accusations
that “the Jews in the Socialist
party are reaching for power,”
charging those who opposed
anti-Semitism that “thanks to
your links with international
Jewry . . . you have secured
your capital as labor leaders
so that your livelihood in exile
will be assured. . .” Such were
the threats that have not ma
terialized but nevertheless in
dicate that there is a growing
anti-Semitism in the land of
song and music that had turn
ed to hate and greed among a
large portion of the popula
tion.
The decline of Austrian Jew
ry will be better understood
bv viewing comparative fig
ures. In 1924 Austria’s Jewish
population numbered 350,000
with 300.000 living in Vienna
alone. There was a decline to
a pre-war figure of 178,364—
most of them in Vienna. Then
came the wholesale slaughter
by the Nazis.
In 1953 there were 13,000
Jews in Vienna. Now there are
10,500—and most .of them are
old people. Thus a great com
munity has declined. It is a ful
fillment of a prophecy made
more than 40 years ago, by
Hugo Bettauer, in his book
“C i t y Without Jews.”
