“Molly's at the wheel tonight .

ulated) and find yourself inspired
to curb civil rights, smash police
review hoards, worm your way
into leadership of the PTA, push
that UN skyscraper into the sea,
and hang Earl Warren to a
weeping willow tree.
When we visited the Birch
summer fair at the fourth annual
Boston rally for God, Family,
and Country a few days ago, we
didn’t see any of the agenda-dec
orated water glasses on display;
but we were struck by the sharp
use of many methods of commun
ication by the hawkers of hys
teria, innuendo, and quarter-
truths. You could press a button
at the “Let Freedom Ring" booth
and immediately be informed by
a voice that would prefer to re
main anonymous that the good
ladies of the League of Women
Voters are busy trading with the
enemy and scrapping our Con
stitution for a Communist-dom
inated world government, “while
their sons and husbands are dy
ing in Viet Nam." You could sit
in a darkened room and learn
how to teach political science to
a high school class by means of
slick film slides painfully over
simplifying the threat of domes
tic Communism while conveni
ently forgetting about another
tyrannical evil, Fascism. You
could carry off a handsomely
printed, gorg e o u s 1 y colored
pamphlet urging you to be loyal
“to Jesus Christ Saviour, Foun
der of America” embracing this
sweet ecumenical message: “It
was Satan who crucified Christ,
using the Jewish, blood-thirsty
Rabbi’s of the synagogues and
the Jewish intellectuals, lawyers,
rulers and the Pharisees of the
infamous Sanhedrin.” (There was
no extra charge for the apostro
phe in “rabbi’s.”)
You could learn how to start
a twig or branch of the Patri
otic Women’s Clubs of America
and thus choke off the subver
sive gallop of Life, Time, and
Look. Or for something to keep
you busy on rainy nights, you
could become a Friend of Rhod
esia and hoist your own flag for
apartheid.
No end of hobbies for idle
hands and fingers.
The folks who run the God,
Family and Country Rally in
Boston each July deny energetic
ally that the show is a John
Birch Society festival. The Ded
ham matron who serves as exe
cutive secretary of the summer
fiesta made it clear at the onset
that “God was chairman of the
rally”; but she is so busy run
ning the Yahoo circus that it
seems hard to imagine her with
any left over time to put up jams
and jellies. And yet as the ac
knowledged leader of a John
Birch Society chapter, this same
matron shelters in her Dedham
home the “Let Freedom Ring”
service which is currently trying
to undermine the citizenry’s
confidence in the League of
Women Voters.
Technically, then, the John
Birch Society is not listed as the
sponsor of this three-day, mid
summer madness. But Birchers
are all over the lot. Bob Welch
himself was in and out of the
booths like a full-time shopper
and at the rally’s $15-a-plate
banquet introduced the guest of
honor, Thomas J. Anderson, a
member of the John Birch Na
tional Council. The rally key
noter was Dr. Revilo P. Oliver,
Friday, September 2, 1966
contributing editor of “American
Opinion” and also a member of
the National Council. Former
Notre Dame Law School Dean
Clarence Manion, still another
member of the Birch board of
elder statesmen, was cheered
lustily as was every mention of
the name of the Society.
America is robust enough to
ride out such assaults upon her
dignity and upon her political
liberties so firmly guaranteed
But with the Birch Society now
obviously embarked upon a fev
erish effort to he an influence in
politics at a precinct level and
with the leaders of this carefully
constructed ideological mechan
ism shrewdly working (while
others sleep) to capture the mind
of America, we can’t take the
threat lightly.
Beneath the bubbles and the
baubles of the summer fair there
exist a dead seriousness and a
nagging danger. Mon: S. J.
Adamo, writing recently in the
Catholic Star Herald (New- Jer
sey), articulated the need to
face up to that hazard in these
perceptive words: “The (John
Birch) Society breeds an atmos
phere of distrust, antagonism
and hatred. This atmosphere
thickens at times to a consistency
where it is an eyelash away
from violence.”
