Quebec Editor Fired
Fqr Anti-Semitism
MONTREAL (JTA) — A
spokesman for the separatist
Ralliement National Party of
Quebec said the editor of the
party’s official newspaper, La
Nation, had been discharged after
widespread criticism of anti-
Jewish material published in it.
The spokesman said that the
editor, Joseph Costisella, was

Washington Thugs
Raid Synagogue
WASHINGTON (JTA) — An
Orthodox synagogue on the edge
of the District of Columbia has
been vandalized so badly and
desecrated so many times that
the situation “calls for some
thing more than ordinary polic
ing,” The Jewish Week, Wash
ington’s newspaper, reported.
The house of worship is the
Young Israel Shomrai Emunah
Synagogue, in Hyattsville, just
across from the boundary of the
District of Columbia. The syna
gogue’s spiritual leader, Rabbi
Gedalish Anemer, reported that,
in four raids within a five-day
period, vandals smashed 40
windows; tore up Holy Scrolls;
spilled wine on prayer shawls;
broke a Star of David decoration
separating the men’s section from
women’s section; defaced walls;
and burst open locked doors.
THE
LIGHTER
SIDE
A Rabbi who went before the
Board of Directors of his shul to
ask for an increase in his salary,
was asked to present his case.
The old-timer began with an
analogy.—
“Once upon a time there was
an old Rabbi who made his
rounds in a small European
community with a horse and
wagon. One day a youth stop
ped him and asked, “Rabbi,
how come your horse's coat
always looks so much better
than yours?”
The old Rabbi smiled and ex
plained, “You see, I take care
of my horse but my congregation
takes care of me!”
board which would “carefully
screen” all material published in
La Nation to “avoid any more of
this.”
The criticized material had
sought to link Quebec Jews with
“international Communism’’ and
charged that they had given no
thing to the development of the
Province of Quebec. The state
ments were described by Saul
Hayes, executive vice-president
of the Canadian Jewish Congress,
as stemming from “ignorance or
malice” and as a “mischievous
and pernicious smear."
