New Year Message
Honor and Nobility
by RABBI TOBIAS GEFFEN
Shearith Israel Congregation
ATI. A NT A, GEORGIA
Rosh Hashana, the Jewish
New Year, introduces a period
on the Jewish calendar dedi
cated to sincere prayer and
hopeful observance of our
greatest annual Festival sea
son. These Holy Days mark
the begining
of a new cycle
in the life of
the individu
al Jew. Our
sacred House
of G-d, the
Synago g u e,
during these
days, draws
the vast majority of Jewish
men, women, and children into
its holy place of assembly for
the special services tradition
ally recited on Rosh Hashana
and Yom Kippur.
The sound of the Shofar
goes fourth with its symbolic
message to the entire House
hold of Israel. It calls out to
every member of the Jewish
people—reminding him of our
glorious heritage. The Tekiah,
Shevarim, and Teruah recall
to his heart and mind the great
gifts of G-d bestowed upon
Israel in ancient days—our
Holy Torah, the immortal
words of the Prophets and the
profound wisdom of the Holy
Writings.
The entire Liturgy of the
High Holy Days reemphasizes
for every Jew today the great
ness of our ancestry—the faith
ful Patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac,
and Jacob; the dynamic Pro
phets, Isaiah, Jeremiah, and
Ezekiel; the brilliant men of
the spirit, David, Daniel, and
Ezra; the wise teachers, Akiba,
Maimonides and Rashi and all
of their many outstanding con
temporaries in so many fields
of thought, learning and re
ligious idealism. During these
Yomim Noraim—these Solemn
Days—our understanding is re
awakened as to who we are,
what we stand for and what is
required of us in these days of
crisis, conflict, and confusion.
We seek to be cleansed of our
day-to-day pettiness and to be
raised on high to new and
lofty standards of meaningful
living. Our souls are imbued
with a real desire to lead lives
of purpose and significance.
Our minds and hearts are open
ed to the great ideals and
wonderful teachings of G-d’s
Torah given to mankind
through Israel. We are inspired
by our religious faith to live
henceforth in honor, in the
performance of good deeds, in
charity both in word and deed.
We seek to dedicate ourselves
to the noblest efforts on behalf
of humanity. Thus, Rosh
Hashana and Yom Kippur—
over a period of ten truly im
portant days—give us the right
directions which lead to a year
of blessing and good fortune.
May all of you, my dear
friends, members of Congrega
tion Shearith Israel, with
whom, thanks to the Almighty,
I have shared more than half a
century of Jewish living and
you, my dear friends through
out the City of Atlanta and
other parts of the South and
many sections of the United
States and Canada—mey all of
you be granted a year of
Happiness, Health, Life and
Peace—this year and in all the
years to come.
New
Year
Greetings
