Rabbi Judah Cahn of Met
ropolitan Synagogue in New York
recently joined the lists of those
who believe the American Jew
ish community needs to get itself
organized.
Addressing his congregation
shortly after UN Ambassador
Arthur Goldberg was drawn into
the quarrel that exploded over
what President Johnson may or
may not have said about Jewish
support for his Vietnam policy,
Rabbi Cahn said: “Jewish leader
ship in this country is splintered
with no coordinated plan of ac
tion. It seems to me that if the
American Jewish community is to
arrive at a state of maturity and
the life and future of the Jewish
people in the United States, we
must begin to think in terms of
an organized American Jewish
community.”
Rabbi Cahn is to be congratu
lated for his call for the con
solidation of forces. But it’s been
made many times before. And it
has even been heeded up to a
point. (The formation of the
American Jewish Congress in
1918, when Rabbi Stephen Wise
succeeded in getting 133,000 peo
ple to cast ballots for setting up
an apparatus by which Jews
would be represented at the
Peace Conference, is one histor
ical example. The creation of the
National Community Relations
Advisory Council with participa
tion by nine national agencies
having community relations pro
grams along with some 80 local
metropolitan Jewish community
relations bodies is another case
in point. Even New York City,
in recent months, has established
a Community Relations Council
with the support of 10 well known
Jewish organizations. And of
course there is the Conference of
Presidents of Major American
Jewish Organizations, which, in
June, indicated it had ambitions
to transform itself from a group
of presidents into a formal, over
all body representting the over
whelming majority of American
Jews.)
No, the problem doesn’t lie in
lack of demand that efforts be
made to unite the forces and trim
the communal fat. The problem
comes once the machinery is set
up and the call arises for disci
pline. Who in this egalitarian pa
radise has the power and the
tamima to tell the well-publiciz-
heads of Jewish organizations
ho\V and when they are to carry
out certain chores? And who is
going to keep whom (claiming to

identity of his true friends in
American Israel?
Even this evaluation doesn’t go
to the heart of the issue. Rabbi
Cahn himself did that when he
said that “the Jewish community
is actually not a community.”
Nor does it give much promise
of becoming one as long as the
fires of hatred burn so low and
each man continues (fortunately)
free to select his own set of Jew
ish values and concentrates on
his own choice of interests.
The statistics, the times, the
trends, the fascinating motiva
tions of people in power all con
spire to keep a purposeful and
resolute union of forces at a min
imum.
You have seen the figures; 85%
of all Jewish children in the
United States stop their Jewish
education at the age of 13; 18%
of marriages among Jewish youth
in the U. S. are mixed marriages;
70% of all children born of such
marriages are lost to the Jewish
community.
The young people who have
found a treasure in Jewish her
itage and know with unshakable
faith that the history, the code,
the ethics are superb, are kept
at a distance by those in power
and far too often see Jewish or
ganizational life exclusively as
one unending package of bore-
some and windy meetings and in
cessant jockeying for authority
and recognition. Why should
they become caught up in this
spiral for recognition when they
naturally observe that the most
laurels are won by those who
raise the most money and not
those who serve the community
selflessly as scholars, constructive
critics, and social innovators?
Still, it is good for the Jews
of this lush and free America
to have Rabbi Cahn at hand to
ask sharp questions. An improved
community will arise only if chal
lenges are accepted. And the in
