SOUTHERN ISRAELITE Friday, December 16, 1966
COMMENT and OPINION
AN EMPEROR’S COURAGE
It is not more than thirty years since the
world first came to recognize the dignity, re
sponsibility and courage of the Ethiopian
Emperor, Haile Selassie, and over twenty
years since his triumphant return home. He
has since given more evidence of his wisdom
and statesmanship. These qualities were
shown to the full in his recent tour of the
Arab world, when once again the Emperor
proved that courage and honesty are the best
policy. Pressed by his Arab hosts to give them
at least verbal support in their denunciation of
Israel, with which Ethiopia has close ties, he
firmly refused, confining himself to the hope
that just solutions would be found speedily.
By doing so he helped to bring nearer the day
when the Arabs will recognize that they must
reconcile themselves to Israel’s existence and
find a human solution to the problems of the
Middle East on this basis. Once it became clear
that the Emperor’s stand was unshakeable, the
Arab Governments accepted the fact and put
the best face on it. The moral of this episode
deserves to be taken to heart by Western
Governments and institutions. The Emperor’s
good will has been invaluable to Jewish insti
tutions working to help the Falasha commun
ity, the Judaized Ethiopians. There is much to
be done for this far-flung outpost of Judaism.
Plans are afoot, with support from Anglo-
Jewish groups, to intensify aid and help the
advancement of the Falashas. This will fur
ther cement the friendship between the Em
peror and the Jewish people.
THE LONDON JEWISH CHRONICLE
WHITHER JUDAISM?
The American Jewish community is in
serious trouble. It has chosen to define itself
as one of the three major religious bodies of
the country, yet all polls indicate that it has
little regard for religion and regular attend
ance at religious services among Jews is negli
gible. A Gallup poll indicates that 15% of
Jews attend Sabbath Services regularly.
From my point of view, this is a high estimate.
In San Francisco, a ten per cent attendance
would crowd our synagogues. Recently, Catho
lics, Protestants and Jews were polled wheth
er religion is very important to them. 90% of
the Catholics answered in the affirmative.
Some 70% of the Protestants considered re
ligion very important. Only 30% of the Jews
could commit themselves, that religion was
very important. . . To be sure, we are living
in an age of the shaking of the foundations,
but for the Jewish community to set so rapid a
pace in its flight from religious commitment
and identification, spells danger to our sur
vival and what is almost as distressing to our
respected position as one of the three major
religious bodies of the country. How much
longer can we be taken seriously as a religious
community, when our intellectual, social and
philantropic elite make no commitment to the
synagogue or to their religious heritage, and
our masses are indifferent?

Javits May Seek
V. P. Nomination
NEW YORK (JTA)— Senator
Jacob K. Javits, the Republican
who is the senior U. S. Senator
representing New York State,
projected himself as entitled to
be nominated in 1968 as “at least”
the Republican canddiate for the
Vice-Presidency.
In several apperances on tel
evision, and in off-the-air inter
views, Mr. Javits, who has been
mentioned as the possible GOP
running mate to Michigan’s Gov
ernor George Romney, pointed
out that he has been the Repub
lican Party’s ideologist for 20
years, and that he has proved
himself as qualified by showing
he is “responsible and farsight
ed."
“I think,” he said, “I am en-
tiUed to national consideration. I
don’t want to minimize it all. I
think I am entitled to a national
position by what I have done.”

Editor Explains Failure
To Publish ‘Babi Yar’
LONDON (JTA)—Aaron Ver-
gelis, editor of the Soviet Yiddish
monthly Sovietish Heimland,”
published in Moscow, has at
tempted to explain here why he
failed to publish the famous
poem “Babi Yar” by the Soviet
poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko de
voted to the tens of thousands of
Jews killed in the outskirts of
Kiev under Nazi occupation.
The Yiddish editor said that he
did not publish this epic poem—
which calls for eradication of
anti-Semitism and has been
translated in many languages —
because Yevtushenko failed to
blame the mass-massacre of Jews
in the Kiev ravine of Babi Yar
squarely on the Nazis.
Here on a visit, Mr. Vergelis
held a press conference at which
he also said that the Soviet auth
orities are doing their best “to
assure the survival of Yiddish”
among the Jews in the Soviet
Union.
