week of Simhat Torah was
chosen by the Atlanta Commit
tee on Soviet Jewry as an ap
propriate time for this expres
sion of support since Russian
Jewry has managed in the past
to celebrate this holiday in spite
of oppression.
Reports last year said some
12,000. Jews, mainly youngsters,
danced and sang outside the
main synagogue in Moscow on
Simhat Torah. However, an
Israeli newspaper claimed that
in Leningrad, police armed with
clubs dispersed 5,000 Jewish
youths attempting to participate
in Simhat Torah celebrations in
that city.
The Atlanta program will in
clude participation by the youth
and adult community, folk
singing and dancing and a guest
speaker. Protesting the treat
ment of Jews in the Soviet
Union, the program is entitled

of Hope celebrates its thirteenth
birthday with a Continettal

day, Oct. 12, at 10:45 a. m„ at

“Zorba" by Nikos Kazantzakis.
To celebrate its “coming ot
age” thirteenth birthday, new
members will be guests, of City
of Hope’s Atlanta Chapter.

“Tzedakah” Oct. 17
“Tzedakah,” the story of the
work of the American Jewish
Joint Distribution Committee in
behalf of Jewry overseas, will
be shown Sunday, Oct. 11, on
“The Jewish Welfare Federation
Presents,” weekly television pro
gram seen from 12:30 to 1 p. m.
each Sunday on WTCG-TV,
Channel 17.
“Let Them Live or Let Them
Leave.”

organizations in Atlanta.
The Atlanta Jewish Welfare
Federation, which is coordinat
ing the protest, has announced
that its weekly television pro
gram on October 18, on Channel
17, WTCG, at 12:30 p. m., will
be “The Price of Silence,” a doc
umentary on the plight of So
viet Jewry* starring Edward
G. Robinson.
The committee urges the en
tire community to watch this
program and then come to the

their support of Soviet Jewry.

The Ahavath Achim Adult
Education Committee has an
nounced its fall series of courses,
lectures and concerts will begin
on Monday, Oct. 26.
Prof. Allen Pollack will be
the speaker at the first pro
gram, discussing “The Role of
the Soviet Union in the Middle
East.”
On November 23, author Dr.
Chaim Potok will speak on
“The Image of the Jew in Cur
rent American Literature.”
Fall semester courses and the
instructors will be “Sexual
Mores in Rabbinic Judaism,”
Rabbi David H. Auerbach; “Jew
ish Music Through the Ages,”
Cantor Isaac Goodfriend; “The
Constitution of a Civilization,”
S. Hirsch Jacobson; “The Con
flicts Within a Nation,” Jonas
Wirtzburger. There will also be
courses in beginners’ Hebrew,
taught by Joseph Zelman, and
Conversational Hebrew, Uri
Koppel, as well as beginners’
Yiddish.
