BBYO/AJCC
BBYO’ers throughout Georgia
last week celebrated the
observance of B'nai B’rith Youth
Organization Week in Georgia.
The largest Jewish youth
organization in the world, BBYO
is comprised of Aleph Zadik Aleph
for boys and B’nai B’rith Girls for
girls. Atlanta's program serves
more than 800 eighth through 12th
grade young people.
A youth-run program that
teaches leadership, community
service, cross-cultural understand
ing and responsibility to Jewish
heritage, BBYO and its influence
has been in existence for more than
50 years.
The question of the scope of the
influence of the BBYO program
once youths leave high school was
recently reflected on by Paul
Bodner, Atlanta Council BBYO
director.
Bodner noted that every Jewish
U.S. congressman and senator had
belonged to AZA as a youth,
including Georgia Congressman
Elliott Levitas, who rose to the
office of International AZA vice
president.
“BBYO is a fertile training
ground for our nation's leaders as
well as our community leaders,”
said Bodner. “It really reaches
home when we know our
community leaders like Leon
Eplan, City Planning manager,
and Irving Kaler, State Ethics
Committee chairman, were both
involved in BBYO as young men.
So as they say: we must be doing
something right."
