Public needs to cry out
on Shcharansky behalf
Announcement from Moscow
that the ICGB has appointed an
attorney for Anatoly Shcharansky
has made the public outcry in
behalf of Shcharansky increas
ingly important, according to the
Soviet Jewry Committee of the
Atlanta Jewish Welfare
Federation, which is planning a
march and rally on March 15.
An announcement this week by
Konstantin Apraksyn, chairman
of the Presidium, Municipal
KoHege Barristers of Moscow, that
an attorney had been appointed,
gave no indication when a trial
would take place. Apraksyn said,
“This case is very complicated.
Many people are engaged in it.”
However, the National Conference
on Soviet Jewry interprets the
appointment of the attorney as an
indication that Shcharansky will
soon be formally charged and that
a trial can be expected soon.
Ben Rabinowitz, AJWF’s
Soviet Jewry Chairman, said that
the urgency to let the public know
of Shcharansky’s impending trial
and to demonstrate to the Soviet
authorities that Americans care, is
top priority. Rabinowitz urged the
community to participate in the
candlelight march and rally in
behalf of Shcharansky on
Wednesday, March 15, at 7 p.m.

Jewish leaders won’t budge
for the Carter Administration
WASHINGTON, (JTA)-The
Carter Administration’s efforts to
bring the American Jewish
community leadership closer to its
views on major U.S.-Israel policy
differences apparently were
unsuccessful at a recent White
House luncheon and briefing for
31 Jewish community officials
from 19 cities across the country,
according to information
obtained.
While those present refused to
discuss substantive matters after
the luncheon, it was learned that
the guests firmly took issue with
the Administration’s proposed
“take it or leave it” planes sale
package for Saudi Arabia, Egypt
and Israel and its attitude toward
Israeli settlements which the
