Conferences to mobilize
Jewish communities
To galvanize and mobilize the
American Jewish community for
effective support of Israel's cause
during the next few critical weeks
as the search for a Mid-East peace
continues, four major regional
leadership conferences will be held
concurrently on Thursday, April
13, in Atlanta, Philadelphia,
Chicago and San Francisco.
Sponsored by the Israel Task
Force of the National Jewish
Community Relations Advisory
Council, each of the conferences
will draw in Jewish communal
leaders from the surrounding area,
together with Israeli officials and
experts from national Jewish
community relations agencies.
Rabbi Israel Miller, Israel Task
Force Chairman, in announcing
the projected conferences,
commented that “grave and
difficult challenges immediately
confront the American Jewish
community” in the early aftermath
of the Begin visit and in view of the
Administration's apparent
determination to press its
proposals to sell advanced U.5.
aircraft to Saudi Arabia and Egypt
while cutting back on airplanes for
Israel. “We must consult together,
arm ourselves with facts and
concert our efforts to keep the
momentum toward a true, just and
durable peace going,” he added.
Theodore R. Mann, chairman
of the National .Jewish
Community Relations Advisory
Council, stressed that the planned
regional conference will not be
open meetings, but non-public
working sessions, attendance
limited to individuals specifically
invited by the NJCRAC and its
national and local member
agencies. i
“Tlje aim" said Mr. Mann, “is a
hard-headed assessment of the
situation, a serious disciplined
consultation on strategies and
tactic*, and a mobilization for
effective action.”
Arrangements are being
coordinated locally by the Israel
Affairs committee of the Atlanta
Jewish Welfare Federation. In
Atlanta the conference will be held
at the Temple.

I hope you were as fascinated
and inspired by “King," the recent
NBC television documentary, as
was I. Because so much of it was
filmed right here in Macon last
summer we were naturally anxious
to see for ourselves just what the
finished product would look like.
Of course, it is impossible for any
three-part documentary to ever
begin to tell the whole story of
those explosive years, but surely
there was much for all of us to
remember and »o learn from the
life and message of Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr.
Many Jews, both lay and
rabbinic, took an active part in
supporting .the Civil Rights cause.
Our record of support is one in
which we can be justifiably proud.
Nevertheless, like most whites, we
Jews still have a way to go to rid
ourselves of prejudice.
(One case in point is the
unfortunate term “Shvartzeh,”
which one still hears in common
use. A Yiddish word for the cplor
black, it has for generations been
used to refer to Black men and
women, who are often in our
employ. This is not a regional
proclivity by any means. The term
“Shvartzeh" is in use by Jews all

over America, and certainly not
just below the Mason-Dixon line.
Frankly stated, I view its
continued use as an affront to an
entire race of people. Its
connotations are offensive and
derogatory. To those who may say,
“But rabbi, we mean nothing by
it!,” I would remind them that the
same is said by those who persist in
using the expression “Jewing him
down.”
“Shvartzeh" is an ugly,
demeaning term and it should have
died out with our grandparents'
generation. Its use is unbecoming
to those who use it, for it is far
below the ethical standards we
Jews have and must continue to set
for ourselves.
