JFCB to be honored
in community wide Shabbaton
Synagogues in the Atlanta area will honor the Jewish Family
and Children’s Bureau with a JFCB Shabbaton Friday and
Saturday, May 19 and 20. Rabbis of the congregations will
highlight the agency and its variety of services which assist Jewish
individuals and the Jewish family.
“No longer can we rest on the laurels of the past which depicted
the Jewish family as the pillar of strength and cohesiveness, said
Leonard Cohen, director of the Bureau. “The Jewish family is
being beset by the same problems affecting the families in the
general community with a spiraling divorce rate, problems of drugs
and alcoholism, and many others,” he said.
The Jewish Family and Children’s Bureau, funded by the United
Way and the Atlanta Jewish Welfare Federation, however, is,
according to Cohen, “a reflection of the Jewish commitment
toward the quality of family life and represents the high priorities
our community places on the Jewish family.” “The Jewish Family
and Children’s Bureau constantly attempts to be sensitive to the
changing needs of our society and to be responsive to offering the
kind of help needed,” he added.
At the present time, the Bureau offers consultation and
individual services to various sister agencies such as the Hebrew
Academy, Solomon Schechter School and the Atlanta Jewish
Community Center Nursery School. Its services include
adolescent, single parent, parent-child, marital counseling,
resettlement of Soviet Jews, outreach to the aged, including Meals-
on-Wheels, and various modes of counseling and therapy,
including group therapy.
The JFCB Shabbaton is intended to provide a better
understanding of the kinds of services offered.
