Religious girls exempt from army
by Joshua Brilliant
Jerusalem Po»i
Non-religious girls who live with
their observant parents will be
eligible for exemption from
military service, just as religious
girls will, the Likud, the National
Religious Party and Agudat
Yisrael agreed recently.
The agreement averted a
possible Agudat Yisrael break
away from the cabinet, which
would have left the Likud and the
NRP dependent on the
Democratic Movement for
Change for a majority in the
Knesset. The DMC is not a party
to last week’s agreement; but
Finance Minister Simha Ehrlich,
who had discussed the matter with
some DMC leaders, said he
believed the agreement would not
lead to a new crisis. (The DMCs
votes are not necessary to win a
majority for the bill when it comes
before the Knesset.)
The agreement concluded last
week after intensive negotiations
provides for the amendment of the
law on military service to exempt
any girl who declares before a
judge or a dayan (rabbinical court
judge) that she cannot serve for
reasons of “religious conscience."
The girl would also have to
declare that she does not travel on
the Sabbath and that she keeps
kosher, both at home and away:
Such a girl would be released
“after making the declaration.’’ No
questions would be asked, but a
girl found to have made a false
declaration would be liable to two
years imprisonment, to be
followed by the regular stint in the
army.
The exemption boards, which
Agudat Yisrael maintains have
sometimes been unfair to the girls,
will not be involved in these cases.
They will, however, question girls
from Orthodox homes who
request an exemption because of
the “religious atmosphere at
home" but refuse to declare that
they keep kosher and do not travel
on the Sabbath.
Agudat Yisrael claimed that
some 50 to 100 girls, mainly
daughters of Oriental rabbis, ritual
slaughterers and other religious
functionaries, undergo “a crisis”
each year. If they still live with
their parents, there is a chance of
bringing them back into the fold;
but such a chance would be lost if
they were drafted to the army, the
Aguda maintains.
I hr bikini-clad girl in this demonstrator’s placard declares, “I’m
religious.” It was all part of a demonstration to protest girls being exempt
form the Israeli military because they were religious.
