‘Dirty’ words enter
Mideast discussions

HAIFA—We understand that
the American cdurts have been
called upon to pass judgment with
respect to the Acceptability of
popular, public usage of certain
four-letter words. Of course there
is nothing immoral or obscene
about any collection of
alphabetical letters, but some
people are quick to attach
meanings and connotations which
stem from associations in their
own minds. In other terms, a word
becomes dirty not by virtue of its
utterance, but as a result of the
interpretation given to it by the
person at the receiving end.
1 am led to these observations
because a number of words which
have entered the lexicon of
contemporary political discussion
about Israel and the Middle East
have been given connotations that
reveal the state of mind of the
people who pounce upon them. I
select a few common instances, but
am sure the reader can think of
many more.
Security, as used in Israel’s
presentation of its national stance,
has come to mean a weak Israeli
excuse to extend its conquests. Or,
as used by one commentator very
recently: “Israel’s obsessive
concern with security...”
Settlements, a dirty word with a
long history. In Czarist Russia
Jews were forbidden to settle or
reside near Aryans. In the Middle
East this is applied to sections
which are to be judenrein by law.
Oil, a precious source of energy,
which will be denied to American
homes and industries unless the
Israelis do as Sadat insists.
Lobby, sometimes thought of as
a democratic means of making
opinions known in Washington,
but in this case the Jewish lobby is
an insidious, underhanded, anti-
American operation which even
Nahum Goldmann abhors.
Golan, an area which Israel
immorally refuses to return to
Syria, thus denying to Syrian
troops the beautiful view of Jewish
colonies and villages spread below
it.
Christians, a strange sect in
Lebanon which is responsible for
giving the Moslems a bad image.
May be slaughtered at any
opportunity since they are reliably
reported to have had some remote
historic connection with Judaism.
Stubborn, this is a filthy word
frequently used about Menachem
Begin when he thinks of the
Holocaust, or the five times the
Arab natipns have tried to drive
Israel into the sea.
Now, a simple word, usually
associated with peace. Its pristine
purity is sullied by Israelis who ask
embarrassing questions about
what comes after “now.”
Jerusalem-This word means
“City of Peace," but it has been
made dirty by people who cannot
recall what is used to be like when
it was divided by walls and barbed
wire, when snipers shot into the
streets, and access to holy spots
was not available to all.
This can become a game. Add
your own definitions of popular
words which can be made dirty—
when dirty people give them
distorted meaning.
