Israel town of Nahariya
becomes ‘wild and crazy’
by Nrchemia Meyers
What was once one of Israel’s
quietest and most sedate towns has
suddenly become its wildest.
That is the seaside resort of
Nahariya.
Founded in 1934 by hard
working, deeply serious
immigrants from Germany, until
recently it was known chiefly for
the excellent ice cream and cheeses
produced by a local dairy and for
the quaint horse-drawn buggies in
which honeymooning couples
toured its tree-lined streets.
In recent weeks, however, it has
been “invaded” by thousands of
United Nations troops, who spend
their days patrolling southern
Lebanon and their evenings
womanizing and drinking in
Nahariya, which lies a scant eight
miles south of the Lebanese
border.
Much to the displeasure of
Nahariya’s young men, the U.N.
soldiers have successfully attracted
the attention of many local girls,
but for serious sex, the servicemen
turn to dozens of transplanted Tel
Aviv prosititutes, who offer their
wares at prime prices in a market
where supply cannot seem to keep
up with demand.
The same imbalance between
supply and demand exists in
Nahariya’s handful of bars.
Formerly open only on weekends,
when they usually sold more Coca
Cola than Scotch, the bars are now
operating and full of hard-
drinking men in blue berets every
night of the week.
Liquor sales have also grown
enormously at Nahariya’s
sidewalk cafes, where groups of
U.N. men will often order a dozen
bottles of beer at once, and then go
on to order a dozen more.
AJCC branch building
campaign is extended
The Atlanta Jewish Community
Center's building fund campaign
for the Zaban Branch in North
Atlanta has been extended to
August 31 in an effort to reach the
announced goal of $2,500,000.
Sidney Feldman and Bernard
Howard, campaign co-chairman,
said the campaign is $350,000
short of its goal and the additional
month will enable workers and
captains to complete their
solicitations.
Feldman called many of the gifts
“downright inspiring,” but said
thousands of individuals have yet
to make a pledge. Howard added
that “many opportunities still are
available to honor or memorialize
loved ones.”
Honorary Chairman Erwin
Zaban said, “What better, more
permanent, more useful place to
perpetuate a name than within the
dignified but functional setting of a
Center and within the hearts of
children of future generations.”
The chairmen called for workers
to respond “in the clutch, down the
stretch drive.” However, they
urged those who have not been
contacted to come forward and
make their pledge voluntarily.
Mrs. Claire Balser will staff the
campaign office at the AJCC each
weekday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
during August and can be called at
875-7881.

This doesn’t visibly effect most
of them, as beer in Oslo or Dublin
has twice the alcohol content of
Israeli beer, but some are
thoroughly drunk by the time they
have finished their last bottle and
may end up—albeit'temporarily—
in a Nahariya gutter.
While naturally distressed at the
sight of drunks and prostitutes in
their hitherto quiet streets,
residents of Nahariya cannot but
be pleased by the town’s sudden
prosperity, which has benefited a
very large percentage of the
population. For example, several
hundred people attached to the
United Nations, civilians for the
most part, have already rented
apartments in Nahariya at good
prices and every day U.N.
quartermasters make massive
purchases of bread, milk products,
fruit, vegetables and other
perishables.
Indeed there is scarcely a
businessman in town—whether he
sells bathing suits, pocket books or
beer—who hasn’t seen a rise in
sales.
This has tempted a few of them
to take advantage of the situation,
and so Nahariya merchants have
established a special Better
Business Bureau to deal swiftly
and efficiently with complaints
from U.N. personnel.
“We understand,” explains
Bureau Chairman Ben Berger,
“that the U.N. people have not
come for a few days or weeks; in
fact, they may remain in the region
for several years. And if we want
them to spend their money and
their free time in Nahariya, we
must ensure that they are treated
properly.”
