Protestant official fired
for being pro-Israel?
NEW YORK—The Anti-
Defamation League of B’nai B'rith
expressed concern over the Tiring
of a prominent Protestant official
of the Reformed Church in
America for charging the National
Council of Churches with
conducting “a persistent anti-
Israel propaganda campaign.”
The clergyman, Rev. Isaac A.
Rotten berg, who for ten years had
served as communications director
to the Reformed Church, stated
that “every NCC governing board
meeting has been preceeded by
NEW YORK (JTA)—The
Republican party is waging, for the
first time, a deliberate national
campaign to woo the Jewish voter
as the 1980 presidential race
approaches, according to an article
by Ron Rubin in the July 24 issue
of New York Magazine.
Larry Goldberg, a former Nixon
aide who engineered Nixon’s 1972
win of 40 percent of the Jewish
vote, will lead the Republican
effort along with five staffers and a
budget between $100,000 and
$ 150,000 in preparation of the “big
internal bureaucratic power plays
aimed at criticizing Israel.” He
added that whenever “concerns
were raised in the council about
anti-Semitism, the Holocaust or
the emergence of neo-Nazi
movements, attempts have been
made to trivialize them or to
neutralize them..."
Rev. Rottenberg’s statement
was made in a letter to the New
York Times in which he
questioned the fairness and
objectivity of the NCC on matters
kill"—the election of a Republican
President and the conversion of
the traditional Jewish Democratic
voter to the Republican party.
Eighty percent of all American
Jews live in eight states that hold
80 percent of the electoral vote
necessary to capture the White
House. According to Rubin,
“driving even a minor wedge into
Jewry's long-standing loyalty to
the Democratic party might result
in the election of a Republican
President."
relating to Jews and to Israel and
called for a “loyal opposition to
speak up."
A native of The Hague, the
Netherlands, Rev. Rottenberg and
his wife are Christian survivors of
the Holocaust. His father died in a
concentration camp.
Rev. Rottenberg took the lead in
questioning Archbishop Valerian
Trifa’s continued membership on
the NCC board of governors while
the former Iron Guard leader was
the subject of deportation hearings
in Federal Court. This occurred
after ADL and other human rights
organizations charged Trifa with
involvement in war crimes and
anti-Semitic activities in Romania
during World War II.
Uris cancels
Russian trip
NEW YORK (JTA)—Leon
Uris, author of “Trinity" and
“Exodus," among other books, has
informed his publisher.
Doubleday & Co., Inc., that he and
his photographer wife Jill have
cancelled plans to visit the Soviet
Union this fall, according to a
spokesman for the publishing firm.
In a cable to his publisher, Uris
stated:
“I am cancelling my projected
visit to Russia in protest to the
recent trials, repugnant even by
barbaric Soviet standards of
justice and a blight on the free
spirit that dwells in every man.
Had I been granted a tourist visa or
an invitation by the Writere Union,
it would be conditional upon my
complete freedom to visit
dissidents. Under present
conditions my presence could only
add to the misery and danger of
those courageous souls. I-pray that
a cry of outrage swells from the
world that will penetrate that
curtain of darkness and let the
dissidents know that they cannot
and will not be alone."
Leon and Jill Uris are presently
in Israel researching their next two
books.
