Rabbi Shalom Lewis will
become the first full-time rabbi
of Congregation Etz Chaim at
installation ceremonies on
Sunday, Sept. 24, at the
Perimeter Marriott Hotel.
Rabbi Lewis will be installed
by his father Rabbi Albert
Lewis of Hadden Heights, N.J.
Rabbi Lewis, who has served
as part lime rabbi to the
congregation over the past
year, received his rabbinical
ordination in May from the
Jewish Theological Seminary
of America.
He received a bachelor's and
master's degree in education
from Temple University and a
master's degree in Hebrew
Literature from the Jewish
Theological Seminary. Rabbi
Lewis served as part time rabbi
in Wurtsboro, N.C. before
coming to Atlanta.,
Karen R. Friedenberg, and
Eileen S. Cohn, local advertising
consultants will conduct a course
entitled “Advertising and Sales
Promotion for Small Businesses,"
as a part of the Evening at Emory
Series. The course, co-sponsored
by the U.S. Small Business
Administration begins at Emory
on Monday, Sept. 25, and runs for
eight consecutive weeks. Call 329-

The Bar Mitzva of Alan Jay
Pechter of Atlanta will take place
at 10:30 a m.. Saturday. Sept. 23,
at the Temple. A congregational

Sherry Frank, of Memphis,
formerly of Atlanta, has been
appointed by Secretary of State
Cyrus Vance to serve a three-year
term as National Council ot Jewish
Women representative on the
United States National Commis
sion for UNESCO. The
commission is a 100-member body
which advises the government on
UNESCO’s program and budget
and which serves as an information
and community action link
between the American public and
UNESCO. President of the
Atlanta section of NCJW for four
years, Mrs. Frank is deeply
involved in NCJW activities, and
is a member of a number of
national standing committees as
well as being a board member of
the Memphis Section and the
SoiKhern District. She is also a
member of the Committee on the
Status of Women of the
International Council of Jewish
Women (ICJW), and was
chairwoman of the committee that
coordinated ICJW’s 1978
Triennial Convention in Atlanta.

Gary Resnick of Atlanta will
participate in the reunion of over
200 relatives of the Steinberg
family taking place in Los Angeles
Thanksgiving day.'\Thus far, 50
percent of the descendants of Yona
and Rahtza Rczyenski Steinberg
and Herschel and Chaya
Kozlowska Steinberg, who
emigrated to the United States
from the small Polish village of
Skarzysko-Kamienna in the early
1900s, have been found. Reunion
organizers are continuing to search
for the remaining descendants.
Many family members have been
located who have survived
concentration camps. Direct
descendants from France,
England, Israel and Canada will be
attending.

Susan Gold, daughter of Dr.
and Mrs. Perry Gold of Atlanta,
has been named to the dean's list
and accorded class hnors at Duke
University for her academic
achievement during the past
school year. During the moiiiii of
May, Ms. Gold worked as an
intern in the Washington office of
Congressman Wyche Fowler. Also
in Washington is her brother, Cary
Gold, who is assistant to the Under
Secretary of Housing and Urban
Development.

Sandra Cohen. Bible instructor
at Yeshiva High School of Atlanta,
recently attended a national
educators' conference on
computer applications to Jewish
Education held at the Hebrew
Theological College in Chicago.
The sessions, led by Dr. Samuel
Spero. director of the Institute for
Computers in Jewish Life, covered
the application of computer
technology to Jewish Studies. The
IC.IL is developing programs
concerning the Jewish Holidays.
Bible, and prayer for classroom
use.
Robert B. Solomon, formerly of Atlanta's Ft. McPherson, is
pinned with an added star by his wife, Fran, and Army Secretary
Clifford L. Alexander, elevating him from Brigadier to Major
General during promotion ceremonies at the Pentagon. Solomon,
a career officer with more than 32 years of distinguished service,
has served as chief of the Armv's Public Affairs since June 1977.
Dr. Herbert Karp of Atlanta observes a slide of a panel from the
Gothic altarpiece of Isenheim Monestary painted by Matthias
Grunewald during the 16th century. Due to Dr. Karp’s efforts,
Atlanta Symphony audiences for the September 15 and 16 concerts
will be able to see what they hear in the orchestra's performance of
Hindemith’s Symphony: “Mathis der Maler,” (“Matthias the
Painter”). A special Grunewald/Hindemith exhibit has been
organized which includes photographic displays of the Isenheim
Altarpiece. The exhibit will also featuke photographs of
Hindemith, a collection of greeting cards and caricatures drawn by
the composer, and memorabilia from his years at the Yale
University School of Music.

inclusion in the 1978 edition of
“Outstanding Young Women of
America."

daughter, Jennifer (Jennie) Sophie

Chatham County Superior
Court Judge Phyllis Kravitch
has been named to a list of five
candidates from which
President Carter is expected to
pick from for a seat on the Fifth
Circuit Court of Appeals.
The first woman elected to a
superior court in Georgia
history. Judge Kravitch, if
chosen for the Fifth Circuit
Post, will succeed retiring
Judge Lewis R. Morgan of
Newnan. The post is a lifetime
appointment with an annual
salary of 557,500.
Judge Kravitch, the first
woman to serve as president of
the Savannah Bar Association,
was selected as Savannah's
most influential woman in a
1978 survey conducted by the
American Association of
University Women. Earlier this
year, she was the recipient of
the National Council of Jewish
Women’s highest award, the
Hannah G. Solomon Award.
