Carter’s sister Ruth
brings pilgrims to Israel
Jerusalem Post
Ruth Carter Stapleton, the
Evangelist sister of U.S. President
Jimmy Carter, arrived in Israel last
week at the head of a 70-mcmber
group of pilgrims on a 10-day tour
“in the footsteps of Jesus.”
Flashing the unmistakable
Carter smile as she led her group
down the gangway of the El Al
plane, Stapleton posed relaxedly
for the battery of cameras that
awaited her. The President's sister
said the main purpose of the visit
was to “deepen our understanding
of the holy places and immerse
ourselves in their history." She
would be preaching to her group of
pilgrims at all the main holy sites
mentioned in the Old and New
Testaments.
Stapleton said she had hoped to
meet with Prime Minister
Menachem Begin, and regretted
that he would probably not be
back from Camp David before she
left. She will, however, be meeting
with Acting Prime Minister Yigael
Yadin, President Yitzhak Navon
and Jerusalem Mayor Teddy
Kollek.

her refusal last month to perform
at Neviot in Israel-occupied Sinai.
A bomb threat at the
Convention Hall proved false. But
outside, members of the “Kach”
movement carried placards
demanding “Joan Go Home" and
“Eretz Yisrael Belongs to the
Jews.” But Ms. Baez quickly
established rapport with her'
audience, composed mainly of
Israelis and American visitors. She
sang without interruption for two
hours after giving a brief
explanation of her political beliefs
following her first song.
She said: “My politics are
without violence. No one has the
right to kill another. I believe in
Camp David (the summit
conference) because I believe that
dialogue is the way to end violence
... I am here because 1 love to sing
with Israelis, like I love to sing with
Arabs, Germans and other
nations."
Her concert featured songs in
many languages including
Hebrew, Russian, Spanish and
Arabic “in case there's an Arab in
the audience." At that J p°>nC the
audience began clapping
enthusiastically to the rhythm of
an Arabic tune, to which the folk
singer remarked. “I'm glad you’ve
got a sense of humor."
Last month it was reported that
Ms. Baez had cancelled her plans
to come to Israel to appear at the
pop ahd folk song festival at
Neviot, a song fest that is part of
Israel's annual music and drama
festival held in July and August. It
turned out later that she cancelled
only the Neviot appearance
because the site is in occupied
territory.
Soup, Go/da’s style:
‘it couldn’t hurt’
TEL AVIV (JTA)—Israel may
soon produce and export a new
soup to be known as “Golda’s
soup." The food production
department of Koor Industries is
expected to be entrusted with the
production of this soup, based on a
recipe to be given by Golda Meir.
The firm’s bulletin reported that
Koor management representatives
visited Mrs. Meir to greet her on
her 80th birthday. While
munching her homemade cookies
she told the representatives that on
a recent visit to the United States
she was asked in a television
interview to identify her culinary
specialty. Without hesitation, she
said it was good, clear Jewish soup.
Thousands of viewers
reportedly wrote to the television
station asking for the recipe.
Naftali Blumental, Koor manager,
immediately suggested that his
firm should mass-produce the
soup to provide this item for
countless salivating palates.
As for Koor Industries itself,
which was established in 1944 by
Histadrut and is now one of
Israel's largest corporations, 1978
is the fourth consecutive year that
it has improved its position in
Fortune magazine's listing of 500
major industrial corporations out
side the United States. Koor is
listed in the 196th place, up from
206th place last year, making it
among the top 200 firms in the
world.
