Dayan resignation signals
numbered days for Begin?
by Vida Goldgar
Calling Moshe Dayan “too
sophisticated a political animal to
resign just because he was
snubbed,” the Jerusalem Post’s
Washington correspondent
suggested to an Atlanta audience
Monday night that the foreign
minister may have sensed that
Prime Minister Begitl’s d.eys as
head of the coalition . are
numbered.
Speaking at Ahavath Achim
Synagogue, Wolf Blitzer said,
“Perhaps Dayan sensed there
would be new elections and
perhaps Begin would be removed
and he (Dayan) could come back.”
Blitzer said he personally thinks
there will be early elections in the
next few months, “Even if Begin
can reshuffle the cabinet and patch
up the government, it is only going
to be bandages, and it won’t take
long to unravel the ideological
splits.”
Despite Israel’s enormous
economic difficulties and political
disarray (heightened that very day
by the Supreme Court’s ruling
against the Elon Moreh
settlement), Blitzer was generally
optimistic about Israel’s future.
Blitzer expressed confidence
that the peace treaty between Israel
and Egypt will succeed and
predicted that though the going
will be bumpy for a while, Israel’s
relations with the United States are
going to be smooth. He warned,
however, that “American
supporters of Israel cannot just
assume everything will work out,
because others are trying to do
everything they can to undercut
United States support.”
Noting that “as long as the
United States depends so heavily
on the Middle East for oil, there
will be problems,” Blitzer said that
Republican presidential hopeful
John Connally’s nine-point
Middle East plan “demonstrates
that he is weak and is caving into
blackmail and becoming the
mouthpiece of the oil producing
companies and the Arabs.”
Blitzer gives President Carter
high marks for “doing something
no other president had done
before" by serving as mediator in
achieving the peace treaty. He
suggested that one of the reasons

Moshe Dayan’s secret talks with
Jordan’s King Hussein failed was
that there was no third party with
the respect of both sides who could
come in and help with an impasse.
Nonetheless, the journalist
accused the administration of
some serious blunders and foolish
policies. He mentioned specifically
United States pressure in 1977 for
comprehensive peace talks which
included Russia and the PLO. and
the “administration’s continued
flirtatious overtures to the PLO.”
"If the U.S. is seen by the
rejectionist states as having doubts
about the Camp David peace
process, the less likely they will be
to support the peace process.”
The United States posture.
Blitzer said, “must be one of
resolute and determined support
for Egypt and Israel to move
ahead. Once the rest of the Arabs
realize the United States is not
going to cave in. the better chance
there is to succeed."
The forthcoming U.S. elections
give American voters the
opportunity to really press
candidates, both presidential and
congressional, to state their views
and to study their records, "and
not accept wishy-washy answers or
platitudes regarding Israel.” which
Blitzer called “unacceptable." He
said, “we have an obligation to get
involved in the process."
