topic of lecture at Emory
J he Biblical Archaeology Study
Group of Greater Atlanta will present
a slide lecture on “Excavations in
Carthage: I he Tophet” at 8 p.m.
Tuesday, Feb. 4. at 101 White
Hall, Emory University.
Dr. Lawrence E. Stager, professor
of Syro-Palestinian archaeology at
the Oriental Institute, University
of C hicago, and director of the
Leon Levy Expedition to Ashkelon,
will bethe speaker. Carthage, founded
in 825 B.C.E., once rivaled ancient
Rome for maritime ascendancy in
the Mediterranean. Carthage prac
ticed child sacrifice at a place called
“the Tophet." similar to what is
described in 2 Kings 17:17. Stager
was the director of excavations at
this site, and he will describe his
works and finds there.

In observance of scouting’s 76th
anniversary. Boy Scout Troop 73,
Troop 613. Pack 613 and the Jew ish
Committee on Scouting w ill partici
pate in “Scout Sabbath" at 9 a.m.
Saturday, Feb. 8. at Congregation
Or VeShalom.
Troop 73 is also celebrating its
36th anniversary. During its first
eight years, it was sponsored by
Congregation Shearith Israel, and
for the last 28 years Or VeShalom
has been its sponsor. Josiah V.
Benator has been the troop’s scout
master for 35 years.

Your Car." Stein will explain the
simple maintenance, costing less
than $200 a year, which should
keep a car off the hook of a wrecker
indefinitely.
